Norman Bird Sanctuary
If you’re seeking an interesting vacation spot for the family, the Norman Bird Sanctuary offers just that. Located in Middletown, the Norman Bird Sanctuary is a nature preserve area located on over 400 acres and serves as a habitat for over 250 species of birds. Visitors check in at the 19th century barn which houses not only the visitor center, but also includes trailside exhibits and a gift shop as well as a history of its own from Native American to the present time.
The Norman Bird Sanctuary offers a little something for the whole family. Take a stroll on any one of the 10 trails which make up over 7 miles through the various habitats, and wind up to four different overlooks of the ocean and surrounding areas. Trails at the Norman Bird Sanctuary include the Quarry Trail which passes through open fields, the Valley Trail offers a secluded walk through ash, oak, maple, cheery holly and beech trees, and the Blue Dot Trail which takes you through the red maples and over a branch of the Paradise Brook.
During the spring when the spring migration is in full swing, the Norman Bird Sanctuary has its annual Birds and Breakfast event. This event includes a guided bird walk followed by a breakfast which includes entertainment for children of all ages. If you enjoy the old time country, head to Norman Bird Sanctuary in October to enjoy hay and pony rides, homemade crafts, high ropes challenges, and live entertainment.
Trails at the Norman Bird Sanctuary are open daily from 9am to 5 pm. Adults will need to pay $4, and children 3-12 will pay $2. Members and children under 3 are free. Guided tours can be arranged for your group, but please contact the Norman Bird Sanctuary several weeks in advance. Special arrangements for handicap service are made upon request.
