Touro Synagogue, Newport

Touro Synagogue, Newport

The Touro Synagogue can be found along the streets of Newport, Rhode Island. Built in 1762, the Touro Synagogue is the oldest Synagogue in America. Whether you are religious or not, you are sure to be able to appreciate the architectural beauty of this historical building. Built and designed by the famous architect Peter Harrison, the Touro Synagogue is considered by many to be one of his finest achievements. The design of the building itself is fascinating, with it's high arched ceilings and large glass windows. The insides of the shrine look even better than the exterior, with it's neat and clean white interior design with massive support columns and beautiful candelabras and chandeliers that hang from the buildings enormous ceiling.

The Touro Synagogue is an ageless testament to the beauty of architecture, and it is one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture ever created. Many people from all over the world, anywhere from hundreds to thousands, come to see this beautiful piece of religious architecture every year. For some it is an annual spiritual experience, but for others it is simply a way to experience a beautiful aspect of the past that is still remaining with us today.

The Touro Synagogue is one of the most important buildings in both Rhode Island and in America in general, because it has become much more than a building. It has become a symbol of religious tolerance and freedom, and it is a great reminder of the fundamental ethics of freedom that this country is based on. The Touro Synagogue is simply essential viewing for those who are traveling in the Newport area.
