Brown University is a distinguished member of the Ivy League colleges that populate New England. situated in the center of an historical residential neighborhood near Providence's downtown, the school is only a few minutes away from many of the historic attractions the city has to offer.
This university is actually the seventh oldest college in the nation, having been founded in 1764 and original construction completed around 1771. The campus itself is a beautiful collection of Gothic stone, wrought iron, and greenery. The ornate gates to the university are only ceremonially opened twice a year, in the autumn to welcome new students, and in the spring to send graduates out into the world.
The campus is also home to several of the country's finest libraries including The John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library dedicated to the social sciences and The John Carter Brown Library which houses an impressive collection of Americana circa 1825.
Brown has long been renowned for it's impressive medical school, but also offers other academic fields to pursue. The university perceives it's mission to be serving the world by preserving and passing on knowledge and the spirit of freedom of inquiry to it's many students. Brown has long been noted as a very experimental institution as compared to it's other Ivy League Companions.
