The City of New York

The City of New York truly defines the new age of mankind and what our future holds in store for us; it is considered by many to be the capital of the world and the greatest city so far to exist in the age of mankind. Many of the world’s greatest landmarks and entities are located in New York, each of which defines freedom, hope, courage, honor, and liberty. It is a city that is known worldwide, a city that so many talk about, and a city that so many want to see. The world is being plagued by terror and hate with New York City as it’s central target, yet the city stands strong and represents all we stand for. It is my job to persuade you, yes, you the reader, to come and experience who you really are in the great city of New York.

The sights and attractions in the city are simply breathtaking and amazing. They may range from the awe-inspiring view upon lady liberty to the serene beauty and enormity of central park, the precise record of our world’s history in the Museum of Natural History to the true meaning of expression and art in the Guggenheim Museum of Art. No matter what each site is, each is just more spectacular than the next, because in New York the more you see the more inspired you get. The beauty of New York is experienced by all who visit, whether it be by the tourists or by the average citizens who live and work there every day. You may find that if you ask each of those who have been there what they think of New York the response will be the same, “The Greatest”.

There is only one true way to take in the sites and to experience New York the way it is meant to be experienced, by taking a tour bus. Why waste time and energy walking many blocks or getting confused on which subway to take when you can just take a tour bus. The bus offers many comforts and conveniences that are not shared by other methods of transportation. Such conveniences include air conditioning in certain parts of the bus, guarantee on having a comfortable place to sit, not having to walk much, knowledge being shared with you about each site by tour guides, and many others.

The most famous of these buses is known as the double decker bus used by the Greyhound bus company for their New York Site Seeing tours. Tours are conducted at certain streets and avenues in every part of New York City imaginable. There is only one base fee for tickets and no hassle in multiple payments as in the case for the subway. We also have the convenience of disembarking at any landmark as long as the bus stops there.

I myself have had the opportunity to travel upon one of these buses and I must say it was an unforgettable experience. The bus traveled all over New York City north to south and east to west, to each site in high demand. Tour guides on the bus were also very helpful because they showed an eagerness and passion in sharing all they knew about their city; something that you cannot get anywhere else but by taking a bus tour of the city. The one thing I won’t forget though is the hospitality and the friendliness of the New York people. As we rode past, they waved and greeted us, happy to have us in their city; this is what I will never forget on my ride through New York.

New York City, not surprisingly, has the largest population of any city in the United States, and is the center for corporate and social America. The city houses many successful international corporations, world-class museums and art galleries, and so much more. The city’s 8 million people include immigrants from over 180 different countries making New York what it is, a land of opportunity and hope. First controlled by the Dutch it was captured by the English and made into a royal colony. When the United States became a free nation in 1776 New York City was selected as it’s capital until 1790. As immigrants started to flood into New York in the 19th century it became the largest city and its economy was on its way to becoming one of the best the world has ever seen. The city stood strong through the civil war, though divided among sympathy to the north or south the city remained as strong as ever. It was during the 1st half of the 20th century when New York City secured its place in the forefront of the world’s economy through the rebirth of Wall Street, the construction of the United Nations Headquarters, and inflow of population. New York now is the home to hundreds of attractions and 39 million tourists; it is a city that so many must see.

The City of New York is divided into sections, all of which can be very confusing unless properly explained. The sections of the City include the downtown financial district, Greenwich Village, Midtown, Uptown and Harlem. The most famous places are located in the Financial District, Midtown, and Uptown. If you cannot take a tour bus to travel as you please there is another alternative, the city bus. Taxis may get you where you want but with a high cost, the subway may get you to your destination but they require vast knowledge of the area not to mention they are dangerous; that only leaves buses. New York City buses are found everywhere and stop wherever you please; although it doesn’t have the comforts of a tour bus it is pretty darn close.

The Downtown financial district is basically the center of New York, it is what keeps it going and what makes its economy such a booming one. Places of interest include the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Ground Zero and a memorial to all those lost on 9/11, and the New York Stock Exchange. Each of which has it’s own significance.

The Statue of Liberty represents all that New York stands for freedom, hope and patriotism. It stands on its own separate island at the tip of Manhattan and is accessible by use of ferry. France gave the statue to the U.S in the late 19th century; it stood for a symbol of friendship between the two countries and no matter what they would always be there for each other. As immigrants flooded into America the first thing they saw was the statue. They were awed and inspired for they knew such a great wonder could only exist in a land of freedom and opportunity. Now is your chance to see what they saw, come and experience the beauty and wonderment of New York’s mother, Lady Liberty, firsthand. You can reach the Statue by taking either a ferry from Battery Park near South Street Seaport or a ferry from Liberty State Park located in Jersey City. The monument has been closed due to the September 11th attacks, but recently has been open to the public. You may walk from the museum located in the pedestal all the way up to the crown where you will experience a spectacular view of the New York Skyline.

Right across from the Statue of Liberty represents another monument of freedom and hope, Ellis Island. This was the place where immigrants first came as soon as they arrived in America. At first some were in awe of such a magnificent building, it was nothing like they had ever seen in their native countries. 12 million immigrants had come to America through Ellis Island, but in 1990 due to declining immigration the Island was closed to immigrants and open to the public as a museum. The museum shows how hard the immigrants really had it but yet managed to beat the odds and make it big in this country. The museum shows true the true determination of our people and how far they were willing to go.

Perhaps the most famous of all landmarks in New York is what remains of the twin towers. On that fateful day in September our freedom was challenged by a group of fundamentalists. They crashed two of our own commercial jets into each of the towers causing them to implode and killing thousands. The attack was terrible but never forgotten; it showed that even through all that we stood strong and united. We prevented what the terrorists wanted to happen, we did not break down. For many people a trip to ground zero (what is left of the world trade center) brings sense of satisfaction and oneness, it cannot be explained but it is human nature. Ground Zero as it is today represents looking forward and what the future holds in store for us. Please come visit this memorial and pay homage to all those lost.

Downtown also holds centers of its booming economy, but the most famous of these being the New York Stock Exchange. The New York Stock Exchange is currently the largest stock exchange in the world. It is home to over 2800 companies valued at near 20 trillion in global capital. The process in which they trade stocks is unique and very different than traditional stock exchanges. It seems as though an auction is taking place at every post where a specific broker is located. The energy and radiance buzzing from the floor can only be experienced by a trip to the NYSE.

The main attractions that New York has to offer are located mostly in Midtown, these attractions range from Madison Square Garden to the United Nation’s Headquarters and everything in between. Located on 34th Street between 5th and 6th avenue is New York’s tallest building, the Empire State Building. The building stands at 1250 feet to the 102nd floor but with the addition of its broad casting tower it now stands at 1455 feet. One unique feature of the Empire State Building is it’s floodlights which illuminate the building different colors to match seasonal changes and holiday, a feature that makes the New York Skyline seem less lonely since the loss of the Twin Towers. The view from the observatory tower is simply breathtaking; it is like none other that you can get in New York.

Ask anyone what the center of midtown is there answer will always be the same, Times Square. Times Square has the famous theatres of Broadway, gigantic plasma screen TVs plastered about making it the only neighborhood to rival Las Vegas in terms of bright lights. Times Square was first designed to be a group of businesses whose job it was to look out for the district and make it one of the most tourist friendly areas, and that is exactly what they have done. From the numerous television stations and programs being filmed to 5 star gourmet dining Times Square is a must see for any tourist visiting New York.

One of the most famous transportation centers is the Grand Central Terminal. It is a major train station in and out of New York City, besides serving as a vehicle taking you from one part of the City the trains that depart from Grand Central also travel to many of New York State’s counties including Fairfield, New Haven, and West Chester. Besides being the largest train station in the world Grand Central terminal also serves as the home to many gourmet fast food restaurants in including the world famous oyster bar noted for its New York Clam Chowder.

An enjoyable activity in midtown at Christmas time is ice-skating, but you can just ice skate in any old rink; there is only one place where you can truly ice skate, Rockefeller Center. Rockefeller Center is a group of commercial buildings located between 48th and 51st street. It houses the world’s largest indoor theater and home of the famous Nutcracker Musical, Radio City Music Hall. It is also home to headquarter of the network NBC and it’s studios. Lastly as stated before the most enjoyable activity is ice-skating, the rink is located on the below level plaza and is centered around Prometheus bringing fire to mankind. Rockefeller Center is a landmark that describes the business and fun of New York City.

The city also plays host to a variety of sports teams during the winter season and there is only one place to catch these teams in action, Madison Square Garden. The Garden is located on west 34th street between 9th and 10th avenue. The Garden is best known as the home of basketball team New York Knicks and the hockey team New York Rangers. It also hosts the WNBA’s New York Liberty and a string of boxing matches. There is another side to the Garden besides sports, it also plays host to a variety of events including concerts, the circus, and even Democratic and Republican National Conventions.

Besides the entertainment and financial centers there is also an international side to New York located in Midtown, it is the United Nation’s Headquarters. Located on 42nd street and 5th avenue the Headquarters overlooks the East River. The complex includes 3 major buildings, the Secretariat (office space), the General Assembly Building (where member of the U.N meet) and its world famous library. The building is open to the public wishing to know about how our government handles international relationships and how the U.N works as a whole. For a tourist it is a must see because it is the only U.N building in all of the United States.

Uptown is known mainly for one thing, Central Park. Central park is known to New Yorkers as an escape from all the hustle and bustle of their busy life out in the concrete jungle to their own private jungle. The park is 843 acres of sheer bliss; places of interest include artificial yet beautiful lakes, tracks, ice skating rinks, playgrounds, and miles of grassy plain for you to do whatever you please. The park is also home to the famous central park zoo and located on the outskirts of the park are some of the most famous museums in New York. These museums include the world famous American Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Guggenheim Museum. The American Museum of Natural History is famous for its habitat groups of African, Asian, and North American display of mammals, the “Star of India”, the largest sapphire in the world, and its first class exhibit dedicated to the dinosaurs. The two art museums, the Guggenheim and the Met are also world famous. The Met shows a more conservative and classical expression of art, mainly famous works by world-renowned renaissance painters. The Guggenheim on the other hand shows a new age of art all about freedom and expressionism, which is obvious in the captivating design of the building.

Once you visit New York you wont ever want to leave, the sights and sounds are enchanting, the history is overwhelming, and the overall atmosphere is one that cannot properly be described in one word. I am proud to call New York City my second home, I am proud of our people for making such a good name of New York, and lastly I am proud that so many from all over want to come to this great city, so please be one of the millions that travel to our city each day.
