Humboldt National Forest
The Humboldt National Forest is actually 2.5 million acres, in nine locations, which are scattered throughout northern and eastern Nevada. The headquarters for Humboldt National Forest is located at 2035 Last Chance Road. The Forest has several areas of interest for visitors. There is the Lamoille Canyon Scenic Area which is 10,000 acres, and is located just twenty miles southeast of Elko. There are also recreational trails in this area, like the Ruby Crest National Recreation Trail. The Lamoille Canyon scenic byway extends about 12 miles up the canyon. There are also lesser known areas, like the Santa Rosa Mountains, which offer more recreation experiences, that are similar to those available in the Ruby Mountains.
In the Humboldt National Forest, you can explore several different recreational activities, like camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, and horseback riding. Those are just a few of the opportunities available to visitors. There are also twenty developed camp and picnic areas, as well as almost 900 miles of trail for visitors to explore. There are sparkling streams, and beautiful lakes, which provide many fishing opportunities, and the game fish found here include rainbow, brook cutthroat, and Dolly Varden trout. Skiing and snowmobiling can be done in the Ruby Mountains, and there is also good hunting in the area, including deer, and rabbits.
