See the Joslyn Art Museum
The Joslyn Art Museum is a premier center for the visual arts, and has been since it opened in 1931. The museum is located at 2200 Dodge Street in Omaha. This is the state's only fine arts museum with an encyclopedic permanent collection. This museum features works from ancient to modern, with an emphasis on nineteenth and twentieth century art from both Europe and America. Some of the works you can expect to see, from the museum's permanent collection are as follows.
Sir Thomas Lawrence was a sought after Romantic portraitist. He was a child prodigy, who started drawing portraits at the age of six. He entered the Royal Academy School of Arts at the age of 18. Portrait of Sir Samuel Shepherd is the first work by Lawrence in Joslyn's collection.
A special treat for new visitors is the audio guide for the Art of the American West Galleries. This audio guide features about ten works on view in the museum's Art of The American West galleries. This informative and entertaining tour includes paintings by Alfred Jacob Miller, Charles Russell, and the famed bronze Bronco Buster by Frederic Remington, among many others. There are two recordings to accompany each piece of featured artwork. The first recording will discuss the artist or the subject, and the second recording will remark on the materials or techniques used. The guide is set up in such a way that visitors may view the pieces in whatever order they choose to. The total recording time is about 35 minutes. These audio guides, that are held up to the ear like a telephone, are free with admission to the museum.
