Visit the Comstock Lode in Virginia City, Nevada
Virginia City was a boomtown that appeared quickly due to the Comstock Lode mine. This mine is the richest known silver ore mine in the United States.
The mine was discovered in the mid-1800's and the discovery was filed publicly in 1859. The mine is located on the eastern slope of Mt. Davidson, which is a peak in the Virginia range.
Prospectors rushed to the mine to get in on the silver ore "mother lode" and Virginia City became a place of wealth. The excavations in the mine went to depths of roughly 3200 feet (1000 meters) below the surface until the seepage of underground water brought the mining to an abrupt halt.
The mine was finally abandoned in 1898 and in present this is a mine you can take a walking tour of and get a feel for what it was like to have been a miner in those days. Many mines can not be entered due to poisonous gases and other safety issues, making this a fun jaunt to make that is a little off the beaten path, but good fun for anyone that loves history.
Make the Comstock Lode a must see on your next visit to Virginia City.
