Visit the Hoover Dam
On your next excursion to Vegas, be sure to visit the Hoover Dam. The Hoover Dam harnesses the power of the Colorado River located in the Black Canyon.
The Dam has been opened since 1936 and is listed as a National Historical Landmark. The Dam itself is named after Herbert Hoover who was instrumental in the creation of the Dam. This is Nevada's largest dam and draws over one million visitors each year. The dam is located roughly 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas and is a truly awesome man-made structure.
The water cascades downward in a hypnotic fashion and the tours inside the Dam itself are jaw-dropping when you see how much rock was tunneled out to create the massive control stations needed to run the dam that creates the electrical power for much of the area. The reservoir created by the Hoover Dam is called Lake Mead, and is one of the nation's busiest national parks along with being a great destination for anyone that loves water sports.
The Hoover Dam is located at US Hwy 93 on the Arizona and Nevada border. The hours of operation are open daily from 9AM to 5PM. Admission to see the dam is adults are $11, seniors (62+) and military personnel pay only $9, a junior admission (7-16) is $5 and children (0-6) are free.
