Safety and Buses
One such method would be to have buses, irregardless of whether it's a public bus, private bus or a charter bus painted brightly for the purpose of safety. It's a well-known fact that bus drivers can get impatient and are often found (and caught) running red lights. One way of preventing accidents when something like that happens is to have the bus painted in bright orange, yellow or red so that other drivers can see the bus from WAY OFF and have enough time to avoid collision with the bus. Of course, the authorities and bus companies should pay more attention to disciplining their bus drivers, which is the best method of all, but worse comes to worse, a colorful bus will reduce the risk even more.
But some people may not agree with this and contend that coloring the buses in bright colors will not increase safety and instead increase the cost of maintaining and painting the buses. The real issue with bus safety is with the drivers and this group of people hopes that the authorities will deal with the issue instead of imposing such a responsibility on bus companies. Furthermore, there are advertisements and Bus Wrapping being widely done on the exterior of business and if all buses are required to be colored a singular bright color, it would affect the eventual profit of bus companies that provides advertisements and Bus Wrapping services.
In fact, another issue has been raised about colorful buses and it has everything to do with light reflection. While a brightly colored bus cruising down the road will be visible during the night and is useful in preventing accidents, a brightly-colored bus will be an eyesore among other road users.
"I don't know about others but maybe an illuminous yellow colored bus will reflect light well during the night but it would make it really hard for other road users if there are, say, 5 BRIGHT YELLOW buses on the road together with them. It'd be painful to look in the mirror", says Kathleen Junior, California .
Many different colors and different shades have been tested on buses over the years in an effort to curb the rise in bus-related incidents but to no avail. Not only did bright buses not reduce the number of accidents relating to buses, the numbers continue to rise.
Another suggestion on how to improve safety when it comes to buses is to equip the buses with lights and sound so as to make the bus more visible from afar. There are also suggestions of putting reflective stripes on all commercial and public buses.
It all seems interesting enough as we explore the ways to make our buses safer on the roads but how effective it will be and where it will take us remains to be seen.
