The Atwater Kent Museum

The Atwater Kent Museum

A. Atwater Kent, a wealthy inventor who manufactured early radios in Philadelphia, bought the building, the original home of the Franklin Institute, in 1938. He then gave it to the city to establish a museum dedicated to Philadelphia's cultural and industrial history. Kent aimed to celebrate the city's past and inspire the future. This museum is devoted to the history of Philadelphia, and shows how people worked, played, lived and struggled on the city streets and suburban towns of Greater Philadelphia during the last three centuries.

As you travel through time, you'll see more than 100,000 objects on display, including the wampum belt that the Lenni Lenape Indians gave to William Penn in 1682, furniture used by George Washington during his presidency in the 1790s, and a Phillies jersey worn by Mike Schmidt. The museum also holds a full collection of reproductions of Norman Rockwell's homespun covers for the Saturday Evening Post. John Haviland, who was also the architect of Eastern State Penitentiary, designed the 1826 Greek Revival building.

Its exhibits mostly concern the Industrial Revolution and showcase many aspects of urban archaeology. Some assorted items of interest include models of the old street and railway patterns of the city, as well as maps and exhibits showing the Philadelphia's evolution into the city it is today. The children's wing, which is excellently maintained, holds old dolls, toys, carousels, and other items of that nature. Of particular interest is the "City Beneath Our Feet" gallery, featuring artifacts unearthed literally beneath the streets of Philadelphia.

The New Jersey Naval Museum

The New Jersey Naval Museum

Operated by the Submarine Memorial Association, The New Jersey Naval Museum (NJNM) introduces state residents and visitors to New Jersey's Navy heritage and naval history in general. The star attraction here is the USS Ling 297, a 312-foot long Balao Class World War II submarine.

Like all WWII subs, the Ling takes her name from a fish. She was commissioned on June 8, 1945, destined for service in the Pacific. The war ended before the Ling saw active duty, however, and the sub later served as a training vessel -- equally important to fighting in the war, if a little less dramatic. But a tour of the Ling is dramatic indeed, and visitors will get a real feel for the courage it took for ninety-five officers and crew to brave the deep in such small, spartan quarters. On the other side of the coin the ingenuity of the sub's design is awe-inspiring. That so much metal and machinery can be packaged into a sleek craft that transports humans underwater is incredible.

A guided tour takes visitors from bow to stern, exploring the Ling's equipment, quarters and weaponry, which included twenty-four torpedoes and two 5" deck guns (today's Ling sports one 4" gun) for handling military targets too small to warrant the expenditure of a torpedo.

Maintained by volunteers, the Ling makes her home in Hackensack, along with a new addition to the Museum: A Vietnam era PBR (Patrol Boat, River) which has been restored and refurbished to give visitors insight as to what life was like aboard one of these PBR boats.

The Skyscraper Museum

The Skyscraper Museum

This museum, is dedicated to the study of high-rise buildings, past, present, and future. Located in lower Manhattan, it is the world's first museum of it's kind. Ms. Willis is an architectural historian who has been writing and teaching at Columbia University about urban architecture for nearly 20 years.

Designed by the architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merril, the museum was built by the Tishman Construction Corporation. Both companies donated their services, out of support and belief in what it all means.

It is a, not-for-profit, educational corporation offering exhibitions, programs, and publications from its location at 39 Battery Place, near the skyscrapers and concrete canyons of lower Broadway and Wall Street.

The actual size of the museum is rather small, only about 5,800 square feet. The ceiling and floor of the museum is covered in highly polished stainless steel. The effect of reflection gives it a more spacious look and feel.

It's current exhibits include, Ground Zero Viewing Wall, Original WTC Model, WTC: Monument, Des/Dev: Times Square, Big Buildings, Building the Empire State, Downtown New York. Visitors can browse through such exhibits as "Building a Collection", featuring historical artifacts, photographs, city maps, films, models, drawings, and blueprints, highliting the ever changing history of skyscrapers.

On the journey through the exhibits you will see memorabilia detailing the future of high-rise architecture, such as undersized models of the proposed Freedom Tower, which will be the tallest office building in the world. As well as photos of the construction of the Empire State Building. Pictures that depict workers building the emerging tower, and hoisting the limestone eagle up to the fifth floor.

The West Milford Museum

The West Milford Museum

Originally built as a Methodist Episcopal Church around 1860 was the West Milford Town Hall in 1912. The West Milford Museum has a variety of local and regional artifacts, books and collections.

In 1911, the property owners deeded the church and its property to the Township of West Milford, for municipal use only. The building began its years of service to the Township when it became West Milford's Town Hall in 1912 and remained the Town Hall until 1958. When expansion became necessary, the present Town Hall was constructed on vacant land across from the original building. From 1958 until 1987, the building was referred to as the Town Hall Annex.

Located in the heart of the New Jersey Highlands, West Milford is a welcome break from the hectic pace of the metropolitan area. The Museum is located in the center of town, and it holds a record of the Township's rich and storied past. West Milford and many of the surrounding locations enjoy a diverse relationship, and this is preserved and displayed through permanent and changing exhibits of artifacts, documents and photographs.

During the 1980s, the Township determined that the building would be the ideal site for the future West Milford Township Museum. It received official designation by the Historic Preservation Commission as a local historic landmark in 1993.

This simple structure began its humble service to the community as a church during the nineteenth century, and as the twentieth century commenced, it provided a much needed home for the Township's government. Now, during the early years of the twenty-first century, the Museum building continues to serve the Township of West Milford by preserving its history for present and future generations.

The Guggenheim

The Guggenheim

There have been many descriptions, and interpretations on the eccentric shape of Frank Lloyd Wright's brilliant work of architecture. Some have referred to it as a snail, a bun, a concrete tornado, and a wedding cake, while others can see it as a tea cup. Call it what you will, it's design will compete for your attention with the art. It was completed in 1959 and is Wright's only architectural work in the city of New York. It has been dubbed New York City's youngest landmark.

Once inside the Guggenheim you will travel a spiraling rotunda circling over a slightly inclined ramp, which takes you past the exhibits. Ranging from Norman Rockwell's most impressive exhibit of this painter's work. The progression can be confusing, guards are always present and ready to assist one onto the correct path.

Other great artists displays dazzle the eye, such as the great works of art from the 19th - 20 th century artists Brancusi, Braque, Calder, Chagall, Robert Delaunay, Giacometti, Kandinsky, Klee, Leger, Miro, Picasso, and Van Gogh. These fine works of art can be seen in an annex called the Tower Galleries. A few critics say it resembles a water backed toilet bowl. You be the judge.

In addition to the World Beat Jazz Series, which can be heard throughout the rotunda between 5 and 8 on Friday's and Saturday's, the Guggenheim offers special programs. Such as free tours, free family films, a limited schedule of lectures, and curator led gallery tours on select Friday afternoons.

You should plan on spending at least half a day visiting the Guggenheim. This is advisable in order to properly view the galleries, and building.

The Aviation Hall of Fame

The Aviation Hall of Fame

The Aviation Hall of Fame founded in 1972 is in Teterboro, New Jersey.
It is dedicated to the preservation of the Garden State's distinguished, two-century aviation and space heritage. The men and women, whose outstanding aeronautical achievements have brought world-wide recognition to the state, are enshrined in the Hall of Fame.

The New Jersey Aviation Hall of Fame and Museum is located at Teterboro Airport in northern New Jersey, just minutes from New York City. It consists of the Fred Wehran Pavilion, which houses the museum's administration offices, gift shop and the Ray Wells Skyroom Theater. The Richard Dehmel Wing, added in 1997, houses the majority of the museum's historic artifacts, including the Silvio Cavalier Research Library.

The Hall of Fame and Museum is the result of the vision of H.V. Pat Reilly. Reilly was the public relations director for Pan American Airways, which managed Teterboro Airport for its owner, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Reilly notes that at the time he first conceived of the museum, Teterboro Airport itself and the men, women and companies that called Teterboro home had developed its own unique place in aviation history.

In the 60-seat Ray Wells Skyroom Theater, visitors are shown a nine-minute film highlighting New Jersey's 207-year aeronautical heritage. It is also used for lectures, conferences and meetings of various groups, including the Civil Air Patrol, local flying clubs, and the Ninety-Nines organization of women pilots. The theater is also available for non-aviation related functions.

The recently expanded musuem offers visitors an opportunity to view historic air and space equipment and artifacts, photographs, fine art and an extensive model collection. The Library has more than 4000 volumes and hundreds of aviation video tapes.

Admission:
Admission: Adults - $6.00 Children [under 12] and Seniors - $4.00

This seaport was once a major impact on the country, city, and the state with it's commercial imports and exports. The goal of the museum is to show visitors this awesome history through programs and events.

One program called Fish Tales, Saturday Story time at the seaport, features a weekly book reading and allows visitors to gaze through a microscope and examine the critters of the water.
