Avila Adobe Museum Is one of the oldest homes in the Los Angeles area. It has a long history. It was originally constructed by Don Avila, the mayor at the time, who began construction of his adobe home in 1818. A site was selected just a few hundred feet north of the town's plaza, where the citizens gathered on a regular basis. He built his house on the east side of Olvera Street, one of the oldest streets in Los Angeles that was also the social center of town. The plaza where the Avila Adobe is located today is not the original plaza. The first site was settled by Felipe de Neve and the eleven pobladores (settlers) on September 4, 1781, may have been near the point where the Hollywood Freeway crosses the west bank of the Los Angeles River today. This original site was washed away by floods, not once but twice. Residents finally began rebuilding the plaza area in a place that did not flood. By 1928, the area had fallen into decay. The once prominent and lively plaza fell victim to neglect and in time it became an urban slum, a skid row. Filled with crime and dilapidated houses. The Avila Adobe was among those houses that were in a huge state of disrepair until a young woman named Christine Sterling was taking a walk in the area and envisioned the entire plaza revitalized. She also knew the history of the Avila Adobe and felt strongly against the old home being razed. She launched a drive to have the home declared a historic landmark. The house was restored using the traditional methods to make the restorations as authentic to the original designs as possible. The sturdy walls of the Avila adobe were between two and a half to three feet thick and made from sun baked adobes bricks. The only main change was to the roofing of the Avila Adobe. The original roof was flat, not angled as it appears today. Natural "Brea" or tar was brought from the pools of asphaltum located near the north boundary line of his Rancho La Cienegas. These tar pits may still be seen at Hancock Park on Wilshire Boulevard. The brea was mixed with rocks and horsehair, then applied to the rough wooden beams of the roof. This mixture created a seal protecting the contents of the house from the elements and to this day works very well. The Avila Adobe is open for tours from Tuesday through Friday 10AM-3PM. The Avila adobe survives as a legacy to the great city's historic and cultural past.

Los Angeles Old Plaza The Old Plaza was an old gathering spot. When Christine Sterling was working to revitalize Olvera Street from ruin, she also worked on the Old Plaza area. Originally this area was imagined Mexican landscape not unlike the renowned tourist districts of Mexican border cities. The theme of this area was "old Mexico," pitting a timeless, romantic, Spanish-Mexican culture against industrialization, immigration, urban decay and modern life itself. The streets that border the plaza now feature rows and rows of curio shoppes, and eateries just to name a few. There are a myriad of things to see and do around the plaza. During the time that the civic department wanted to revitalize Los Angeles and the downtown area, Old Plaza was slated for revitalization due to a major slum area developing due to lack of commercial development. This unique place is a center for all kinds of meeting places and shops. There are also a number of historical houses in this area. Today, the Plaza and Olvera Street site comprise the forty-four acre El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, El Pueblo Monument is at once the historic heart of Los Angeles, a popular tourist site, a Mexican-American cultural symbol, and a complex microcosm for shifting cultural and political agendas in Los Angeles. The Plaza is still a magnet for the locals to come gather, and if you get a chance to stop in this area during your tour of Los Angeles, be sure to take a stop by Old Plaza and take in the very history of this place and its people.

Elysian Park Los Angeles Elysian Park is a great get away for a day. This nearly 600-acre park is the second largest in Los Angeles and has been a public park since 1781. There are still several unspoiled hiking trails on which to trek. The area known as the Chavez Ravine Arboretum is dotted with rare trees planted throughout the 19th century. The park is open from 6am-sunset daily. Additionally, Elysian Park is home to numerous historic sites, including the Los Angeles Police Academy and Barlow Hospital, that are linked by miles of walking trails. The park got its start in 1769, Gaspar de Portola and Father Juan Crespi camped on the river bank opposite Buena Vista Hill and Yang-Na Indian villagers greeted the Spaniards with and drink and the Spaniards established a small settlement. In 1781, the Pueblo of Los Angeles was officially established by Spanish California Governor Felipe de Neve with the Royal Grant of 4 square Spanish leagues (translated into 28 square miles or about 17,000 acres) of Pueblo Lands. Interestingly, of this land granted, the approximately 575-acre Elysian Park is the last remaining large piece of this entire land grant. In 1886, the Mayor and City Council of Los Angeles dedicated the Rock Quarry Hills as a city park forever, and renamed it Elysian Park (Elysian is derived from the Greek word paradise). Subsequent city charters have protected dedicated park lands and their use for park purposes eternally. Presently, Elysian serves as a great place to get away and enjoy nature at its finest. This park is extremely well maintained and many of the trails are completely natural and appear to have very little wear. Enjoy Elysian Park on your next tour of Los Angeles.

Craft And Folk Art Museum Next time you're in Los Angeles, make sure to schedule a stop by the Craft and Folk Art Museum. This fantastic display of creative efforts from artists who are mostly considered unskilled and untrained makes for a fantastic feast for the eyes. Some of the art is functional, some is pure whimsy. The Museum was founded by Edith Wyle who originally called the facility "The Egg and The Eye" and she was truly passionate about promoting unknown and traditional artisans. The Museum itself opened in 1974. Presently, the Museum is the only organization in the city whose sole purpose is the development of public programs designed to benefit and encourage awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity and history of Los Angeles through folk art. Art affects people and no stronger community statements are communicated than though the art of its people. The International Festival of Masks was founded by the Museum in 1976 and has become a tradition. Numerous Los Angeles schools, ethnic centers, museums and non-profit institutions participate in this yearly even that brings together many diverse groups of people and celebrates diversity. Los Angeles Fashion District Now known as "The Garment District", this Mecca for shopping is located in downtown Los Angeles and is continually expanding. It currently lists at 82 city blocks of shops, market centers and apparel marts. Serving both buyers and the general public, the district boasts a huge concentration of fashion-related businesses and a block devoted to every type of fabric imaginable, where bargaining and haggling is the norm. If you see something you like, traditionally you would try to strike a deal. It's okay with most merchants to offer less and try to get a deal. There is a good deal of "deal making" at these venues. There is an interesting area called Santee Alley a densely populated "back alley" shopping path between Maple and Santee Street, stretching from Olympic to Pico. This alley is notorious for being home to a large concentration of bootleggers, trying to sell a variety of faux designer goods, ripped DVDs, and other stolen or bootleg items. There are numerous designer knock-offs and police raids are not uncommon to catch these dealers in stolen and fraudulant property. Despite this, there are many reputable and honest merchants in the alley. In the past several years, a huge push was made to revitalize this area in 1995 with the development of the Downtown Property Owners Association (DPOA) which launched one of California's first property based business improvement districts (BID) giving the Garment District a new name in the process. There are also strict policing within the garment community of bootleggers and other illegal activities that before had been merely tolerated. Check out the Fashion District on your next visit to Los Angeles.

Armand Hammer Museum The Armand Hammer Museum of Art and Culture Center (AHMACC) opened to the public in November 1990. It was originally founded by Dr. Armand Hammer and financed by Occidental, the Museum was built adjacent to the Corporation's international headquarters in Westwood. At the time of its opening, the Museum featured galleries for Dr. Hammer's collections - old master paintings and drawings, and a collection of works on paper by Honore Daumier and his contemporaries - as well as galleries for traveling exhibitions and non-permanent installations. Dr. Hammer died in December 1990, three weeks after the opening of the Museum. Upon his death, all construction was halted and the building was never completed, leaving many spaces unfinished. This makes for an interesting view as it seems parts of the dream died with the man. In 1992, the Museum was assumed by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), In April 1994, the partnership with UCLA was finalized and the following year the University relocated to the Hammer its collections and the staff of the Wight Art Gallery. The Hammer also assumed responsibility for the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden, located at the north end of the UCLA campus. The Armand Hammer Museum of Art and Cultural Center is now operated by the University of California, Los Angeles. Its collections are considered among some of the best in the country and with its frequently changing exhibits, there is always something new to see. If you are planning to visit the Los Angeles area soon, make it a point to stop by the Armand Hammer museum, there are a myriad of great artworks to view.

Olvera Street Tour What can one find on a One Day Olvera Street Tour? More than one can imagine. Olvera Street is the birthplace of the City of Los Angeles, otherwise known as El Pueblo Historic Monument. Historic Olvera Street started out as a short lane called Wine Street. In 1877 the street was extended and its name changed to Olvera Street in honor of Agustin Olvera, who owned a home at the end of the street across from the Plaza. He was the first county judge of Los Angeles. By 1903 the street had considerably declined and a large and noisy substation was built next to the Avila Adobe to provide power for the city's electric streetcars. The Italian Hall, a center for Italian organizations, was constructed in 1907 at the north end of Olvera Street. Across the street the Italian winery expanded its building in 1914. Several historic buildings line the street, including the Avila Adobe, built around 1818 by former mayor Francisco Avila, the Pelanconi House, oldest brick house in the city, dating from 1855, and the Sepulveda House, built in 1887 as an Eastlake Victorian business and residential building. While on the Olvera Street tour you will learn about a religious side of it. To show where the original Zanja Madre (or mother ditch) had brought water to the pueblo, its path was marked on the street with diagonal bricking. Trees were planted and a large wooden cross erected at the south end of the street which opened with great festivity as a colorful Mexican market place on Easter Sunday (April 20), 1930. It offered Mexican American vendors an opportunity to sell traditional wares and to make the street a place "to preserve and present the customs and trades of early California." One well-known business that moved to Olvera Street in 1930 was La Golondrina Cafe, the first restaurant in the city to serve authentic Mexican food. Museum of Contemporary Art and The Geffen Contemporary Hours: Monday and Friday 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Thursday 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Saturday and Sunday 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The museum is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. Admission: General admission $8, Students and Seniors $5, Children under 12 are free. The Museum of Contemporary Art and The Geffen Contemporary celebrates new and contemporary art as we know it today. No other museum in Los Angeles engages the population in current art like the Museum of Contemporary Art. Over 5,000 pieces of art call the Museum of Contemporary Art home. There are several permanent fixtures as this museum that draw large crowds each and every year. They are masterpieces that everyone should view once in their lifetime. One of the collections in the Museum of Contemporary Art is the Barry Lowen Collection. This is a collection of 67 pieces of art by artists like Agnes Martin, Joel Shapiro, and Julian Schnabel. They are depicted through minimalist and post-minimalist sculptures, paintings, and photography. Another section of the Museum of Contemporary Art is the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation Photography Collection. This is a huge collection of 2,300 documentary photos by giants in photography such as Robert Frank and Danny Lyon. Something everyone should attend during the summer is a twelve night celebration at the Museum of Contemporary Art. This celebration shows film screenings, has live music, food, and music. It is meant to involve the general public in contemporary art in a way they never knew was possible. The cost of this event is free with Museum of Contemporary Art admission. The arts are an important element of culture. As time goes on, people and art have gotten further and further separated. The Museum of Contemporary Art aims to bridge that gap and bring the arts back to the public. The 1996 bequest of Marcia Simon Weisman brought 83 exquisite prints and drawings to MOCA's permanent collection, including work by Willem de Kooning, Richard Diebenkorn, Sam Francis, David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, and Clyfford Still. In connection with the gift, MOCA has established a works-on-paper study center at the museum. The remarkable growth of MOCA's permanent collection received renewed attention in 1997 when the Lannan Foundation made an extraordinary gift of 114 works by 53 artists. This important gift increased the museum's holdings of several significant Southern California artists such as Wallace Berman, Chris Burden, Mike Kelley, Charles Ray, and Jim Shaw. Additionally, within the past two years, the museum has received several individual gifts of video and multimedia installations, including pieces by Doug Aitken, Tracey Emin, Steve McQueen, Pipilotti Rist, and Diana Thater. MOCA has also been fortunate to receive gifts of work from many artists. Among the most significant of these gifts are 10 paintings from Sam Francis representing the major phase of his development from 1951 to 1992 and a gift from Ed Moses of 11 paintings from pivotal phases of his career. In 1996 the Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation donated six box constructions and 15 collages by Joseph Cornell, one of the most significant American artists of this century. While the museum does not have a large budget for the purchase of artwork, several essential acquisition funds make purchases possible. MOCA was able to purchase 32 significant works by accomplished California artists including Terry Allen, Lari Pittman, Alexis Smith, and Bill Viola, thanks to the El Paso Natural Gas Company Fund for California Art. The Citibank Private Bank Emerging Artists Award sponsored several exhibitions and purchases of work by emerging artists including Kevin Appel, Jessica Bronson, and Catherine Opie. The Gene J. Burton Acquisitions Endowment allows the museum to purchase works on paper, and The MOCA Acquisition and Collection Committee raises funds for specific acquisitions in consultation with museum staff.

Griffith Observatory Residents of Los Angeles and visitors world wide have visited this observatory for over 60 years. Opening in 1935, it is one of the most famous, most visited landmarks in Southern California. Apparently, it was a most anticipated site, as receipts show. On the first day over 2000 people visited the Observatory, with an additional 11,000 visiting during the next four days. The Griffith Observatory is still attracting crowds. It's main feature is the twelve-inch Zeiss telescope. The Zeiss telescope is a refracting telescope using a lens with a diameter of 12 inches to gather light. Having an unique mounting system which gives the eyepiece better stability, and ideal for public viewing. The telescope was purchased in 1930 and installed in 1935. One of the tasks of the Observatory is to dispel people's fears regarding the natural world. Ranging from the simple fear of the dark, to the belief in eclipses as omens of disaster. Many exciting events in the sky have been witnessed at the Griffith Observatory. Such as the return of Halley's Comet, the collision of the fragmented comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, as well as man's venture into space travel. The Observatory has been interpreting the skies for over 60 decades, and stands ready to continue on into the 21st century. The Observatory is under going it's first major renovation and expansion. It will more than double the public space in the building, while maintaining it's classic look. The Observatory closed in January 2002 and will reopen to the public in 2006. Sitting on the southern slope of Mount Hollywood it has a stunning view of the Los Angeles basin. Millions of visitors have enjoyed the view from high atop the balconies, especially at night. At the moment, safety reasons have caused the grounds and nearby hiking trails to be closed to the public. However, the trail from the Observatory parking lot to Mt. Hollywood remains open during construction.
