The natural bounty of California would lend itself well to sustaining these early Native American residents through its plentiful resources include grasses, seeds, root crops, nuts, cactus, land mammals, birds, fish, sea mammals, shellfish, minerals, and raw materials such as obsidian and steatite that tools and hunting implements such as arrowheads were made.

In several museum exhibits you will learn how there were about 60 Native Tribes in the area and they all spoke different languages but got along and traded food and items among themselves. Starting in the mid-1700s, rapid, often violent colonization disrupted California Indian life. Under the Spanish, Mexicans, and European Americans, American Indians suffered starvation, forced labor, disease, and military rule.

Native populations declined drastically. Although people adapted to new ways of life such as herding cattle and using new plants, they did not abandon their traditional beliefs, many of which continue today and are highlighted in many exhibits in the Southwest Museum.

Additionally, you will see amazing art, handicrafts such as jewelry and baskets from long ago and some made just this century to show how old traditions have carried forward virtually unchanged.

Simon Rodia spent 33 years working to build his towers consisting of nine major sculptures constructed of structural steel and covered with mortar containing a diverse mosaic of broken glass, sea shells, broken pottery and tiles. The monument also features a gazebo with a circular bench, three birdbaths, a center column and a spire reaching a height of 38 feet. Over 12,000 people per year visit this historic site.

The Watts Towers Art Center Amphitheater is a state-of-the-art open-air venue providing a home for the annual Watts Towers Jazz and Drum Festivals. There is also a huge Cinco De Mayo celebration and scheduled performances by the Watts Prophets' Youth Poetry Choir, as well as other musical and theatrical events. Interestingly, the amphitheater depicts a historical timeline of Watts area beginning as early as 40 BC. which can be seen in the land around the area.

Melrose might bring to mind the old Aaron Spelling piece of weekly television melodrama. To actually visit Melrose Avenue, you will find a lot of great shops and fun venues to visit, and very little drama.

Melrose offers up a great place to go shopping for clothing and grab some grub for those who walk freely between both worlds of the Glitzy Downtown Hollywood and trendy West Hollywood.

Melrose is sometimes referred to as the trashy second cousin of San Francisco's Haight Street, and until recently that description might have been accurate. However over the past few years, Melrose has cleaned up and become more of a shopping haven.

Whether it's the aggressive facade of the retro-clothing or a moody, darkened bar you're looking for, you'll find it on Melrose.

If you're in the mood to window shop. This is your new home away from home. There are numerous stores with windows just brimming with good buys and as a bonus every few stores brings a good restraurant to stop at and grab a bite to eat. The range of food goes from Argentinean to Indian to Italian to Thai and of course, good old American style cuisine.

The Children's Museum of Los Angeles

The Children's Museum of Los Angeles has been thrilling young and old alike for over 25 years. The museum was a collaborative effort between a group of parents and community leaders who wnated to make a place for children to learn and expand their minds in a safe environment beyond their immediate experiences..

The Museum moved from its original location where it had remained for 21 years and welcomed more than 5 million visitors to its 17,000 square-foot downtown facility.

Soon the Museum outgrew that space and needed to move. In 2000 the Museum moved to its present location within Hansen Dam Recreation Park. The Museum prides itself on a legacy of pride in self and community and tolerance of others is taught. Leaving children with not only a positive experience, but a positive feeling about themselves.

The Environmental Arts Program teaches kids about the value and necessity of recycling. They also have a number of craft projects that are planned around reusing discarded items such as styrofoam bowls and even making masks out of found items and puppets from paper bags.

There is a similiar program at the Museum called Art 2 Go, where teachers and kids can tour the facility and make usable items from things that would otherwise be thrown away. Both programs teach valuable lessons about recycling.

There are a number of planned exhibits in the Museum's future such as a bustling street fair to an Olympic Park, each emphasizing Los Angeles and its place in the world. An ambitious and much awaited exhibit will link local young Los Angeles children with other children around the world so they can share experiences and learn that we,as humans, really aren't so different after all.

The MAK Center

The Mak Center was founded in 1994 to preserve and protect the landmark Schindler House and serve as a architectural gathering point for Los Angeles. The MAK Center offers a myriad of programs, lectures and exhibits for the city's art community to enjoy.

The MAK Center for Art and Architecture is run and maintained by a Museum in Austria and the group known as the Friends of the Schindler House Organization.

The MAK Center offers six month residencies at the Mackey Apartments that allow internationally acclaimed artists, academics and architects from around the world to come to produce and present their work in Los Angeles.

There are numerous tours available at The MAK center and the year round scheduled programming ensures there is always something interesting to see and learn about at this facility.

One of the City's best known private residences, the Schindler House, is maintained here. This house was built by Rudolf M. Schindler in 1922 and it served as the architect's home and the center of a thriving art movement. There are other fantastically designed homes to tour such as:

This darkly, minimalist styled bar has a huge range of bands that play here and the occasional star sighting. This bar is partly owned by one Mr. Johnny Depp, and it's not unusual for known acts such as Tom Petty or Counting Crows to show up and play an entire set of shows under some fictitious surname. Some celebrities are quiet members of bands, Keanu Reeves for one, has played numerous times with his band at the Viper Room.

Everyone from famous faces to interesting and talented unknowns play the Viper Room and you never know from one night to the next what you're going to get. Even if you think you know, you still may be treated to a band filled with members you know and love playing under assumed names for the night.

There is usually a line outside waiting to get in the Viper Room, show up early if you want to be sure you're going to get in the door. The bar is fully stocked and the happy hours are well known as some of the best in this area. The staff is known to be friendly, although the bouncers are known to be tough to anyone that seriously gets out of line.
