Museum of Contemporary Art and The Geffen Contemporary

Hours: Monday and Friday 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Thursday 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Saturday and Sunday 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The museum is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Admission: General admission $8, Students and Seniors $5, Children under 12 are free.

The Museum of Contemporary Art and The Geffen Contemporary celebrates new and contemporary art as we know it today. No other museum in Los Angeles engages the population in current art like the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Over 5,000 pieces of art call the Museum of Contemporary Art home. There are several permanent fixtures as this museum that draw large crowds each and every year. They are masterpieces that everyone should view once in their lifetime.

One of the collections in the Museum of Contemporary Art is the Barry Lowen Collection. This is a collection of 67 pieces of art by artists like Agnes Martin, Joel Shapiro, and Julian Schnabel. They are depicted through minimalist and post-minimalist sculptures, paintings, and photography.

Another section of the Museum of Contemporary Art is the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation Photography Collection. This is a huge collection of 2,300 documentary photos by giants in photography such as Robert Frank and Danny Lyon.

Something everyone should attend during the summer is a twelve night celebration at the Museum of Contemporary Art. This celebration shows film screenings, has live music, food, and music. It is meant to involve the general public in contemporary art in a way they never knew was possible. The cost of this event is free with Museum of Contemporary Art admission.

The arts are an important element of culture. As time goes on, people and art have gotten further and further separated. The Museum of Contemporary Art aims to bridge that gap and bring the arts back to the public.

The 1996 bequest of Marcia Simon Weisman brought 83 exquisite prints and drawings to MOCA's permanent collection, including work by Willem de Kooning, Richard Diebenkorn, Sam Francis, David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, and Clyfford Still. In connection with the gift, MOCA has established a works-on-paper study center at the museum.

The remarkable growth of MOCA's permanent collection received renewed attention in 1997 when the Lannan Foundation made an extraordinary gift of 114 works by 53 artists. This important gift increased the museum's holdings of several significant Southern California artists such as Wallace Berman, Chris Burden, Mike Kelley, Charles Ray, and Jim Shaw. Additionally, within the past two years, the museum has received several individual gifts of video and multimedia installations, including pieces by Doug Aitken, Tracey Emin, Steve McQueen, Pipilotti Rist, and Diana Thater.

MOCA has also been fortunate to receive gifts of work from many artists. Among the most significant of these gifts are 10 paintings from Sam Francis representing the major phase of his development from 1951 to 1992 and a gift from Ed Moses of 11 paintings from pivotal phases of his career. In 1996 the Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation donated six box constructions and 15 collages by Joseph Cornell, one of the most significant American artists of this century.

While the museum does not have a large budget for the purchase of artwork, several essential acquisition funds make purchases possible. MOCA was able to purchase 32 significant works by accomplished California artists including Terry Allen, Lari Pittman, Alexis Smith, and Bill Viola, thanks to the El Paso Natural Gas Company Fund for California Art. The Citibank Private Bank Emerging Artists Award sponsored several exhibitions and purchases of work by emerging artists including Kevin Appel, Jessica Bronson, and Catherine Opie. The Gene J. Burton Acquisitions Endowment allows the museum to purchase works on paper, and The MOCA Acquisition and Collection Committee raises funds for specific acquisitions in consultation with museum staff

Visit the Historic Leu Home and Gardens

The Harry P. Leu gardens and estate feature beautiful outdoor settings, with miles of walk ways set around the meticulously restored Leu House.

Tours of the Leu house are about 20 minutes long and offer a look into what life in Florida was like at the turn of the 20th century. The Leu house started life in 1888 as a two story frame home with five rooms. Different owners throughout the years purchased extra land around the home, and made additions to the home as well. The property was purchased by Harry P Leu in 1936.

The inviting climate of central Florida makes it possible for Leu gardens to grow a wide variety of plants. The gardens contain over 240 varieties of camellia's. One of Americas largest collections not located in California. You can also find the largest formal rose garden in Florida on the Leu Estate. Along with the roses and camellia's you can enjoy orchids, bromeliads and azaleas to name a few of the wonderful plants found in the garden. There are also elm trees and oak trees, providing shade for those who would like to enjoy a stroll through the garden.

One favorite spot for visitors is the butterfly garden. This garden is located next to the cottage that sits in the center of the gardens. Hundreds of different plants have been incorporated into its design, to be certain to attract butterflies all year long.

The Harry P. Leu gardens are located at 1920 N. Forest Ave., Orlando FL. Tranquil Bok Tower and Gardens

A true oasis amidst turmoil. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., these gardens offer the peace and tranquility sometimes missing in modern everyday life. The Gardens sit 298 feet above sea level located a top "Iron Mountain" the highest hill of Florida's Lake Wales Ridge.

These sub-tropical gardens are the legacy of Edward William Bok (1863-1930) Pulitzer Prize-winning author and editor of Ladies Home Journal. Edward William Bok was born in Den Helder, Netherlands and came to the United States with his parents at the age of 6. The gardens are his way of saying thank you to the nation that gave him a chance to succeed. The are also a refuge for over 100 bird species, while at the same time providing shade for the many people that visit daily.

While Bok enjoyed the natural beauty of his gardens, he remembered the wondrous sound of carillons from his native Holland. Architect Milton B. Medary was commissioned to design and build a majestic carillon tower. It would be the focal point of the sanctuary. While his design was neo-gothic, the design of the elaborate marble sculpture, by Lee Lawrie, that decorates the Tower uses the art-deco influences of Florida. Construction of the tower began in 1927 and was dedicated February 1, 1929.

Bok Gardens and Tower are a great addition to any family vacation. They are a wonderful way to enjoy all that nature has to offer, a gift from one of Americas true success stories, Edward William Bok.

This central Florida attraction started life in 1923 as the Sanford Zoo. The first inhabitants were donated by the Sanford Fire Department. The Central Florida Zoologic Park participates in the conservation of animals through the "Species Survival Plan" there are 12 ongoing SSP programs located at the zoo. Every year over 75,000 school children visit the Zoo, and also participate in formal education programs. The objective being to teach biodiversity and appreciation of animals to the children. These programs along with reintroduction and field projects, research and public education will help ensure that the inhabitants of the park will thrive and flourish for many years to come.

The Arts and Crafts Movement Comes Alive

The Arts and Crafts movement has been preserved and comes alive thanks to the efforts of the Morse Museum of American Art, and its founder Jeannette Genius McKean (1909-1989) Granddaughter of Industrialist Charles Hosmer Morse (1833-1921).

Visitors to the museum are able to view not only what is surely the largest collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany's work, but also the work of Gustav Stickley, William Morris, Carl Faberge and Frank Lloyd Wright to name a few of the giants who were instrumental in the Arts and Crafts movement.

Certainly the center piece of the museums collection are the works of Louis Comfort Tiffany. The variety of the Tiffany collection ranges from mosaics, watercolors and pottery to his famous leaded-glass windows. Every medium of Tiffany's life work has been explored, right down to the humblest of objects, glass buttons, created as expressions of beauty. These buttons were done with the everyday person in mind.

The museum also houses a fine collection of paintings and prints by American artists whose works were done in or about Florida. Artists such as Maxfield Parrish, Rembrandt Peal, John Singer Sargent and Samuel F. B. Morse, inventor of Morse Code and distant relative of Charles Hosmer Morse Are represented along with a host of other well known American artists.
