Museum Of Science And Industry The Museum of Science and Industry, is one of the most popular and visited museums in the world. This museum has got humble ties to two great World's Fairs and to civic spirit and imagination of a forward thinking Chicago businessman Julius Rosenwald. Rosenwald, then Chairman of Sears Roebuck and Company, was inspired by a 1911 visit with his son to the Deutches Museum in Munich. He returned to Chicago determined to create America's first center for "industrial enlightenment," a vehicle for public science education as he wanted everyone to know what could be achieved through science. With the help of other Midwest business leaders, Rosenwald restored and converted the Palace of Fine Arts, the last remaining major structure from the 1893 World's Fair, into a new type of American museum - where visitors could interact with the exhibits, not just view displays and artifacts. In 1933, the Museum of Science and Industry opened to the public, at the same time as the Century of Progress Exposition. Rosenwald thought the hands on aspect was very important for people to learn, especially children. Since its opening in 1933, the Museum of Science and Industry has the distinction of being the oldest science Museum of its kind in the Western Hemisphere and attracts approximately 2 million visitors per year. Some of the highlights of their collection include : A WWII captured German submarine on the National Register of Historic Places. A working coal-mine shaft elevator from 1933. A cantilevered Boeing 727 that visitors can walk through. A 3,500-square-foot model railroad, one of the largest in the world. and so much more. Make the Museum of Science and Industry a stop on your next tour of Chicago!

Swedish American Museum Center The Swedish American Museum center was started in 1976 as the dream of one man, Kurt Mathiasson, who was one of the leaders of the Andersonville community and a Swedish immigrant, and it was his goal to preserve the Swedish-American heritage in Chicago. The first Swedish American Museum was a small and humble storefront log cabin in which family histories were collected. During the U.S. Bicentennial Year, His Majesty Carl XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden, officially opened the Museum in its original location. 1987 brought a move and a renovation for the Museum and it was moved to its current location and underwent a Phase I renovation. The King of Sweden returned to celebrate the new beginnings of the Swedish American Museum Center. 1997 another renovation completed and the Museum reopened with newly added gallery space and the donations of the Nordiska Museet exhibit to its permanent collection and display for all the visitors to enjoy. 2000 - 2001 brought even more improvements to both the building the Swedish American Museum is housed in and the collection. A grand staircase to the second floor permanent exhibit was completed, and the new Children's Museum of Immigration for children ages 3-12 opened on the third floor so children can understand what it means to be an immigrant. The Museum is free to members. A nominal donation is suggested for non-members. The Children's Museum of Immigration is included in general admission. Special group rates available, if you're going to be touring Chicago with your group, definitely check out the rates for group tours and you might get a great deal. The Polish Museum In America The Poles have long been known as a resilient people, bouncing back from invasions and oppressions, this wonderful museum showcases these wonderful people and their culture and contributions to society. The Polish Museum of America was established in 1935 as the "Museum and Archives of the Polish Roman Catholic Union of America." The first public display area opened to the public in 1937. Two key events caused the rapid expansion of the Museum's collections. The first originated from the 1939 World's Fair in New York City, New York. The year 1939 marked the 20th anniversary of the Second Republic of Poland and the government of Poland marked that anniversary with a large exhibition at that World's Fair. It would be their last. Unfortunately, in September of 1939 Poland was invaded and war had gripped Europe. At the close of the World's Fair, it became clear that the Polish exhibits could not return to Poland and their disposition was uncertain. A decision was made that in order to preserve at least a portion of the exhibits the directors of the Museum determined to purchase from the government of Poland nearly three fourths of the exhibits. Signifigant expansions had to be made to house the purchases but expand they did and what you see today is the result of all that hard work by these visionary people. The second significant event was the donation to the Museum of the personal possessions of Ignacy Jan Paderewski following his death in June 1941. Both Ignacy Paderewski and his sister, Antonina Paderewska Wilkonska were big supporters and generous sponsors of the Museum. Ignacy had amassed a great collection of culturally important items which were added to the museum's collection. In present day, the Museum is a recognized resource for materials pertaining to Poland and the Polish-American community. Come see Poland's past, present and future all in one place!

Oriental Institute Museum The Oriental Institute Museum will show you a fabulous afternoon exploring the wonders of the history, art and archaeology of the ancient Near East. An integral part of the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute, which has supported research and archaeological excavation in the Near East since 1919, the Museum exhibits major collections of antiquities from Egypt, Mesopotamia, Iran, Syria, Palestine, and Anatolia. When you visit the Museum you will be given an incredible insight to daily life for in the world of ancient humans in this region of the world. Three millennia of civilization in the ancient Near East saw the rise of mighty nations in Egypt, Anatolia, Mesopotamia and Iran. There were smaller kingdoms that left traces for the archaeologists to find of their existence and not much else. To see the artifacts left by these people is to look back at the beginnings of some of mankind's most fundamental endeavors. Amazing sculptures and relief carvings depict the people themselves, as well as their gods and goddesses and even their mundane daily lives. Monumental statues proclaim the glory they gave their kings. There is a good collection of clay tablets, papyrus scrolls and inscriptions on stone show the development of their writing systems and document many aspects of their lives. Objects used in daily life display their skill in decorative arts and reveal the refinement of their tastes. You will see hair brushes, dishes, sculptures, pitchers and so much more. Interestingly, unlike many more widely known museum collections, whose objects were acquired by purchase, the majority of the artifacts in the Oriental Institute Museum were found as a result of archaeological excavations sponsored by the Oriental Institute. These excavated artifacts have an additional and special importance, not only because they are known to be authentic, but also because scholars gain scientific and historical information from the circumstances of their discovery. Be sure to visit this intriguing stop in Chicago the next chance you get to tour this fun venue.

One year later, in March of 1992, the Rock Island Boatworks, featuring the Casino Rock Island, began its gaming cruises. California African-American Museum The mission statement of the California African American Museum says it all "to research, collect, preserve and interpret for public enrichment, the history, art and culture of African Americans with emphasis on California and the western United States". That mission has truly been accomplished in this facility. There are a myriad of contributions African-Americans have made on display There is an amazing display of nineteenth century professional landscape paintings including the works of Edward M. Bannister, Robert Scott Duncanson and Grafton Tyler Brown. Most of these paintings were done at a time when sadly, many African-Americans were still in the chains of slavery and most were viewed as inhuman and incapable of educational and aesthetic pursuits in life. These landscapes reflect the times through the eyes of the artists and should not be missed. The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s brought forth many African-American artists and they established a national cultural identity in all of the arts. As they became familiar with African sculpture, they began to incorporate those elements and iconography into their work. There is also a section of traditional African art that represents works from a number of works from the central African countries of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Cameroon. You will see ceremonial masks, decorative household implements and so much more. There is also an impressive history collection that reflects the history, heritage and culture of African-Americans in California and the Nation. Including inventions by great African-Americans and so many other great contributions that have been made on so many levels. The California African-American Museum is not to be missed, be sure and make it a stop on your next trip to Los Angeles.

Helenic Museum And Cultural Center This is a fantastic venue to make a stop at on your next tour of Chicago. This Museum has only been opened since 1992,but has already been designated by Mayor Richard M. Daley as the anchor of the new Greektown redevelopment project, which is transforming the Halsted Street area into a world-class ethnic neighborhood - full of culture and diversity. This Museum's mission is to preserve the history of the Greek immigrant experience in America, to showcase the artistic work of the Hellenic people in the visual, literary and performing arts, and to celebrate the Hellenic culture of antiquity that is their very heritage. There are a number of fantastic exhibits and all visitors both those of Greek descent and those merely fans of Greek design and culture will get a kick out of this venue. The articfacts and displays were nearly all collected through donations, and current exhibitions include: photographs of family members as well as organizations, business and trade images, phonograph records, icons, embroideries, books in Greek and English, household items, correspondence and military items. Suprisingly, many of these items were slated for merely being thrown away instead of recognized for their historical purpose. The Museum is a wonderful place to learn about the Greek culture and see life from the turn of the last century immigrants to the modern day Greek culture that adds to much flavor to the City of Chicago. If you happen to be in the Chicago area, make the Helenic Museum and Cultural Center a stop along the way and spend an afternoon learning how much quiet influence the Greek culture has had on this fine city!

Illinois Railway Museum Chicago is a great city built on the railway. This museum showcases the rich history and importance of the railway system as a way of getting goods to cities and how cities sprang up around railway stops. Importantly, it highlights the subway system of Chicago which was created soon after the turn of the century, when systems of tunnels were carved 40 feet below the surface in the hard blue clay that makes up this area. This system of railroad tunnels unlike any other in the world was created under each downtown street, utilizing the most advanced construction techniques available at the time. By 1909, a 62-mile grid of intersecting freight tunnels connected all major railroad freight houses and many commercial establishments in downtown Chicago. At the time, the Chicago Tunnel Company operated more than 3,000 diminutive freight cars and 100-plus electric locomotives on this network of two-foot gauge track, coal, ash, and merchandise were moved throughout downtown. In addition, millions of cubic yards of excavation debris and cinders were hauled to landfill sites through the tunnels, creating what is now known as Grant Park. This system had a strong but quiet influence in political and engineering history of the City of Chicago from 1900 until this facility was abandoned in 1959, yet few people ever saw this system and many never even actually knew of its existence. Sadly, virtually no artifacts have been preserved. In 1978, a group of people banded together to start building a collection to commemorate this important facility. Five cars and one electric locomotive remained intact, stranded in a short section of tunnel connecting to Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History and the Railway Museum was started. This is a definite must see venue if you're in the Chicago Area.

DuSable Museum - Do Visit When You're In Chicago Opened in 1961, to a lack of recognition that a diverse group of Chicago artists and educators, including Margaret and Charles Burroughs, felt was happening to black history and culture in the education establishment, and they founded a museum dedicated especially for that very purpose. The Ebony Museum of Negro History and Art was begun in the former home of south side contractor John Griffin that was converted into the Quincy Club and later served as a boarding home for railroad workers before becoming the Burroughs' home. It took 8 more years for the museum to be renamed. In 1968, the museum was renamed after Jean Baptist Pointe DuSable, a Haitian fur trader who was the first permanent settler of color in Chicago. In 1971, they petitioned the Chicago Park District for permission to use the former park administration building, and that permission was granted. The museum is now recognized as the city's principal memorial to Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable and the eighth member of the consortium of museums on Park District land. There are a myriad of things to see that make up this museum, additional gallery space was added in 1993, and there is now two floors of artworks and creations to be viewed. Additionally there is a 450-seat theatre. The DuSable Museum of African-American History is the oldest museum of its type in the country and is the only major independent institution in Chicago established to preserve and interpret the historical experiences and high achievements of African-Americans.
