Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center: Culture Along the Front Range

Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center: Culture Along the Front Range

About one hour south of Denver, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center is an oasis of coolness in an otherwise hyper-religious, militaristic, redneck town. So, what do Campbell's Soup, John Waters and a pottery wheel have in common? They're all featured on the web page of the Fine Arts Center of Colorado Springs. Visit them at http://www.csfineartscenter.org

The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center is currently hosting an exhibit by that all-American boy, Andy Warhol. Andy made a name for himself in the 1960s with a series of silk-screened prints featuring the most mundane of subjects-- Brillo boxes and Campbell's soup cans. The Fine Arts Center of Colorado Springs has acquired a stunning collection of Warhol's work-- both his early, commercial advertising art as well as examples of his later, more famous pieces.

More than visual art can be enjoyed at the Fine Arts Center of Colorado Springs. The center plays gracious host to many fascinating speakers each season. For example, November 2005 will find patrons sharing an evening with the oh-so fabulous John Waters. Waters directed such astonishing cult classics as Pink Flamingos and Hairspray. Members are invited to a screening of the documentary, Divine Trash, before Mr Waters' speaking engagement.

The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center is housed in an authentic adobe structure and recently opened a tasty eatery they call 'Cravings on the Terrace'. The cuisine at Cravings is strictly caterer-quality, with succulent dishes as well as an breathtaking view of Pike's Peak. Make an exquisite day of it with a morning in the gallery, lunch at Cravings and an evening listening to a fascinating speaker. Art doesn't get much finer than right here in Colorado Springs.

Denver Firefighters Museum: Learn Not to Burn

Denver Firefighters Museum: Learn Not to Burn

Located at 1326 Tremont Place, the Denver Firefighter's Museum is dedicated to the preservation of Fire Station Number One. Built in 1909 it was the largest fire station in the city for many years and served as a working firehouse until 1974 when it was designated as a local Denver landmark. In 1979 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been a teaching museum ever since.

The Denver Firefighter's Museum hosts many educational tours for local school kids and summer camp visitors. The many interactive exhibits teach fire safety and how it applies to daily life. The gift shop at the museum has a delightful assortment of things to buy. Burners Ablaze!, the Denver firefighter's offical cookbook, can be had for a fair price and promises many delicious, easy-to-prepare meals as well as an interesting read. The gift shop also sells lots of cool firetrucks as well as hats, jackets and fireman-inspired pajamas.

Firefighting is a dangerous endeavor and the Denver Firefighter's Museum memorializes firefighters who lost their lives defending persons and their property from the ravaging forces of uncontrolled fire. Perhaps their best effort is in educating children in fire safety, so that less lives will be lost in future fires. Kids visiting the museum see the Learn Not to Burn presentations and learn burn first-aid techniques. These lessons are especially invaluable for babysitters and daycare providers.

The Denver Firefighter's Museum is open year-round. Rent space for a special birthday party or unusual wedding reception in the museum, too. Schedule a real live firefighter to speak to your class. View the calendar of upcoming events, see cool old photos and wander the virtual giftshop at http://www.denverfirefightersmuseum.org.

The El Pueblo Museum

The El Pueblo Museum

The El Pueblo Museum is located on the actual site of the historic trading post, El Pueblo, which was built north of the Arkansas River back in 1842. There are many interesting and fun exhibits on display here appropriate for the entire family.

Among these permanent exhibits, you can learn about the region through prehistoric times dating back to 1900. During this time, the railroad system and commercial development was helping to make Pueblo the main industrial center in Colorado. Within El Pueblo, the occupants farmed, traded and ranched in and around this settlement and trading post. This structure, which was made of adobe, was built around a secure interior plaza.

Back in 1854, a group of Apaches attacked the post, which left the site abandoned forever. That was, until 1989, when a group of archaeologists began to uncover the buried past of El Pueblo, and started to expand and enrich our knowledge of the events of the past along the Arkansas River.

Currently, the El Pueblo Museum is undergoing major renovations to be able to enhance the area and facilities to help it grow into an amazing historical site and community center. An estimated $7.2 million investment is expected in the renovation of this wonderful historical site. The new vision for El Pueblo is to increase tourism to the area and raise the visitor count at the museum up from approximately 17,000 to 45,000 within the coming years.

The current cost of admission at the museum is $4 for adults, $3 for senior citizens, $3 for children ages 6 and 12, and free for children 5 and under. Of course, Society Members are always free. For further information, you can contact the El Pueblo Museum at (719) 583-0453 for tour and program reservations as well as any general questions you may have.

Colorado Sports Hall of Fame

Colorado Sports Hall of Fame: Not Just Snow Skiing

Think of sports in Colorado and what comes to mind? Surely the Denver Nuggets, quarterback John Elway and his 1997 Broncos, the Avalanche hockey team. How about Whizzer White, Babe Didrickson Zaharias and Patrick Dempsey? Think of Denver, Colorado and sports probably aren't the first thing to cross one's mind. Wild Indians, stagecoach robbers and the Overland Trail are a likelier first image. But Colorado has been birthplace and home to scores of notable sports figures, and the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame is the place to find out who they were.

Of course it takes sporting skill and extraordinary talent to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Even being nominated is an honor; clearing the hurdles to a full induction is nothing short of remarkable. The Colorado Sports Hall of Fame is located in Invesco Field, Denver. Before of after a game, wander awhile and explore the various exhibits that document great moments in sports history, Colorado-style.

The most recent indutee is former Denver Bronco Shannon Sharpe. Baby brother of another NFL player, Sterling Sharpe of the Green Bay Packers, Shannon was drafted by the Broncos in 1980. Over the course of his remarkable career, Shannon Sharpe earned three Super Bowl rings - two with the Denver Broncos, one with the Baltimore Ravens. He is a well-loved Denver athlete, now retired from football and hoping to make a name for himself in broadcasting. His spot in the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame was a long time coming and well-deserved.

For high rollers interested in investing in the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame, for a one-time feel of ten thousand dollars, one may sponsor a pillar in the Sports Legends Mall - an informative walkway leading to the entrance of Invesco Field. Each of these pillars (there are around 180 of them) features a notable figure from Colorado sports history. Pillars still in need of sponsoring include those of 2005 HOF indictees Joe Belmont, April Heinrichs and Chad Hennings. Contact CEO Tom Lawrence at the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame at 720.258.3536 for information on how to sponsor a pillar.

Molly Brown House Museum

Molly Brown House Museum

A tour through this house is like stepping back in time and it's easy to tell that the staff here really enjoys their job they are all dressed in appropriate clothing for the era and they are full of information about the home and the furnishings. Molly Brown would be proud!

Restored to its 1910 appearance, the Molly Brown House has a large collection of early-20th-century furnishings and art objects, many of which belonged to the Brown family. There are also temporary exhibits some have been about the detailed lives of servants in Brown's day and trends in Victorian undergarments The museums purpose is to pay tribute to Margaret (Molly) Brown from 1894 to 1932. The "unsinkable" Molly Brown became a national heroine in 1912 when the Titanic sank. The famous story is true; she took charge of a group of immigrant women in a lifeboat and later raised money for their benefit.

The Molly Brown House, a three-story Victorian home typical of Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood, used to be one of Denver's quaint little cultural secrets, the home where the Unsinkable Molly lived at the turn of the century. But the 1996 film "Titanic" changed all that. Though the character of "Molly" Brown was only a minor element in the movie, this Hollywood hit caused a run on the museum.

You can learn about the story of the society matron's rise from rags to riches and her political activism and colorful life, including her adventures surviving the Titanic sinking (which was popularized in the musical "The Unsinkable Molly Brown") as you tour the museum. She was also one of the first historic preservationists, and appropriately, the home is now owned and operated by Historic Denver Inc.

A carriage house with a museum store, a very popular gift shop, at the rear is open to visitors. The house can be seen on guided tours.

Colorado State Capitol

Colorado State Capitol

The Colorado State Capitol building is a remarkable sight. Its brilliant golden dome is one of the most memorable features of the Denver skyline. The resemblance between the state capitol and our nation's is no accident-- indeed, the state capitol building in Denver was designed to look very much like the one in Washington, DC. Even the street names are similar-- Lincoln and Pennsylvania Avenues, for example.

The Colorado State Capitol was constructed over a five-year period in the late 1890s. The gold leaf was added to the dome in the early 1900s, to commemorate Colorado's early goldrush days. All of the stone used in constructing the building is from local Colorado quarries. One such stone, a rose onyx found only in this area, was so rare that the entire known quantity of it was used in the making of the State Capitol of Colorado!

The grounds around the Colorado State Capitol are home to numerous memorials. One especially moving place is the Civil War Memorial. There is a plaque here commemorating the fact that, on the average, Colorado provided more volunteers during that horrible conflict than any other state. Another monument on the capitol grounds features the ever-controversial Ten Commandments. It is a momument to tenacity as much as anything, considering how other, similar religious constructions have been removed from state capitols in recent years.

As far as state capitols go, the one in Denver, Colorado is a doozy. Situated on a hill -- quaintly dubbed by locals 'Capitol Hill', it is a serene and lovely home to the many goings-on of government life. At least during daylight hours.. this State Capitol is considered by many to be one of the most haunted state capitols in the country.

Miramont Castle

Miramont Castle

Miramont Castle is a treasure of Victorian America; it's a walk through the delightful past of this era gone by in Manitou Springs, Colorado. It's located at 9 Capital Hill Avenue, Manitou Springs, Colorado.

Miramont Castle was built in 1895 as a private home for Father Jean Baptist Francolon, a French born Catholic priest. The castle features nine styles of architecture ranging from English Tudor to Byzantine and all crafted from locally quarried greenstone and yellow pine framing. Built as a home for a wealthy priest, it features 46 rooms, including an eight-sided chapel, and the famed Drawing Room that features a gold ceiling and a massive 200-ton sandstone fireplace. Another remarkable feature is its walls, which are two-feet thick.

Today Miramont Castle is a museum dedicated to preserving the Victorian heritage of Manitou Springs and the Pikes Peak region. Jean Baptiste Francolon was born in 1854 in the Clermont region of France. Father Francolon came to the United States in 1878. In a letter to his mother, Father Francolon told her how the area reminded him of his native France.

Recently widowed his mother sent him a large amount of money and told him to build her a home. Father Francolon decided to build the home of his dreams, no architect was hired, he had his own ideas from his early years of traveling the world with his diplomat father, and feared that no one else could create the home of his dreams.

Some people say there are mysteries and hauntings at the castle so it's a great place to go if you are into such folklore. There is also a quaint Victorian tearoom called The Queens Parlor where they serve tea with a delightful menu reminiscent of the era. Also available is a large charming gift shop for your souvenir needs. Spend the day at the castle you'll be charmed and delighted.

Museum of Contemporary Art - Denver

Museum of Contemporary Art - Denver

If you're looking for a great place to spend an afternoon on your next excursion to Denver, check out the Museum of Contemporary Art.

This museum is fairly new as it only opened in 1996. The Museum of Contemporary Art/Denver was formed with a very clear purpose in mind, to provide Denver with a major contemporary art museum. The MCA has 7,000 square foot and it is built out of a renovated fish market in the Sakura Square in downtown Denver.

MCA is a unique in its approach to having exhibitions, as it has no permanent collections for the facility and presents only the most innovative and thought provoking artworks. The MCA interprets its own unique role as the presenter of the art works and not just a storage facility for great art. Therefore, the walls are always changing and even if you are a frequent visitor to the MCA, you will always see something different.

Towards the end of 2005, the MCA is moving to a new 25,000 square foot facility which will mean a lot more room to showcase their unique collection of art works. MCA's new facility is both visionary and elegant. It will be a 21st century city landmark and a tourist destination that contributes to the revitalization of the Lower Downtown area of Denver.

This new facility will offer up permanent collections and an ongoing review of local artists on a timed basis for the short term exhibits that the MCA has always participated in.

The Museum of Contemporary Art has a number of fine exhibits going on at any one time and you can see them all at your leisure in an afternoon's stroll around the facility, and taking in up and coming artistic talents is a great way to spend an afternoon in Denver.

National Center Of Atmospheric Research

National Center Of Atmospheric Research

The National Center of Atmospheric Research is a great stop to make on your next tour of Denver and one that is definitely off the beaten path. You may not think it sounds like a very good time or might be a little dry, wrong on both counts. There are a myriad of cool exhibits to check out and a lot of new information to learn. Both young and old will get something out of this venue.

The National Center for Atmospheric Research has many exhibitions on display for your enjoyment. The CISL which stands for CISL Computational and Information Systems Laboratory is always seeking new ways to use their computer equipment to dictate new ways of interpreting the atmosphere through mathematical equations. The IMAGe Institute for Mathematical Applications in the Geosciences follows the same theory in hopes of making it easier to predict weather and other atmospheric events through the application of mathematical formulas.

EOL Earth Observing Laboratory (formerly ATD) develops programs for facilities worldwide to monitor atmospheric changes that directly affect weather. They are currently monitoring the current trends in hurricane rainbands because so many high powered hurricanes have struck the coastal USA in 2005.

The ESSL, Earth and Sun Systems Laboratory studies a variety of things such as the bottom of the oceans, the highest points of Earth's atmosphere and beyond into the solar system, from global warming of the planet to the inner structure of the sun, from the path of hurricanes to the CO2 and nitrogen balance in the atmosphere and how it affects us all.

There is a library available for viewing and friendly staff on hand to answer any questions you might have. Enjoy your visit to the National Center of Atmospheric Research.

Cherokee Castle and Ranch: An Architectural Curiosity

Cherokee Castle and Ranch: An Architectural Curiosity

Within a half-hour of downtown Denver, Colorado, the Cherokee Ranch and Castle is a world away. Built from native stone on the edge of a high plateau overlooking the Sidalia flatlands, the Cherokee Castle is a fascinating anomaly in this fast-paced modern world.

Frederick Flower was the first non-native to live on this land. He filed for a homestead in August 1894 and began constructing the first of several stone houses the following Spring. Fredierick, his wife, Amy and sister, Beatrice spent years building their castle - the sixteen-inch-thick walls were made of locally-quarried rhyolite. Not exactly cozy, the thick rhyolite walls of what would come to be known as the Cherokee Castle provided a buffer against the harsh Colorado winters with their piercing winds.

In 1924 the Flower family sold Cherokee Ranch to Charles Alfred Johnson, a well-to-do Denver businessman. It was during his ownership that the castle really began to take shape. The original homesteaders could not have foreseen the directions Mr Johnson's taste would take. Designed with fabled architect Burnham Hoyt and made to replicate certain features of Scottish castles, Cherokee Ranch expanded to the astonishing construction it is today.

Some time later a Denver socialite with the adorable name of Tweet Kimball became owner and resident of the Cherokee Ranch and Castle. She will be remembered as the most careful of caretakers, establishing the Cherokee Ranch Foundation which provides for the perpetual preservation of the land and buildings as educational resources.

Tweet Kimball was an avid collector of hats, and at certain events at the Cherokee Ranch and Castle, her collection of millinery marvels is displayed. The Cherokee Ranch experience is more than worth the effort to find. As an achitectural curiosity, the Cherokee Castle stands alone.

Buffalo Bill's Museum and Grave

Buffalo Bill's Museum and Grave

The Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave give you an inside view to the life and times of a legend named William F. Cody. Nicknamed "Buffalo Bill" because of his skill as a buffalo hunter, he did many things in his life including herding cattle, mining for gold, working on a wagon train, riding in the Pony Express and much more.

There are many events and happenings throughout the year at the museum. One of the most popular is the reenactment of his burial. Just thirty minutes from downtown Denver, visitors can participate in the "parade" up to Lookout Mountain where he was buried overlooking the Rockies and the Great plains, just where he wanted to be buried. You'll be able to smell the Ponderosa Pines and "watch the mountain wildlife" pass by.

Another event that's fun for all is Buffalo Bill's Birthday Bash. Filled with a collection of Buffalo Bill look-alikes, cake and games like Pin the tail on the buffalo for the children and of course, the annual Buffalo-Chip Tossing Contest!

The Museum space is filled with permanent exhibits that are there year round such as a time line of his life, his life as a showman, his relationship with the American Indians, the firearms that were popular during his time and for the kids a "Cowboy Corral" where they can design a brand, dress-up and even try to lasso a calf! It's interactive fun for all ages. The temporary exhibits rotate every fall and include things like a great exhibit on the horses he loved. There are artifacts having to do with him and his horses like paintings, photos, saddles and other gear. Everyone seems to know about the rider, but they also need to know that the heroes of history couldn't have gotten around as they did, or gotten away from trouble as fast, without their horses.

So check out the museum and the grave and walk away with a little piece of history learned.

Black American West Museum and Heritage Center

Black American West Museum and Heritage Center

The Black American West Museum and Heritage Center is located in Denver Colorado and it preserves the culture and history of the African American men and women who helped to shape the west. Featuring exhibits on African American cowboys like Bill Pickett, it's even located in the former home of Dr. Justina Ford who was the first African American female doctor in Denver. She was truly a medical pioneer. Regardless of the walls she confronted and knocked down, she established a practice in Denver that was a notable one.

Many people don't know that there were actual Black Cowboys. One such person was Paul Stewart, founder of the museum. When he was a child he loved to play cowboys and indians, but always played an indian because he thought there was no such thing as a "black cowboy." That was, until he moved to Denver in the 1960's and met "his first black cowboy." Paul Stewart then vowed to find all information he could on other black western pioneers. And not only has he done that, he's done it VERY well.

Mr. Stewart's search for information led him to almost every corner in the west where he gathered newspapers, clothing, letters, cowboy boots, saddles, personal artifacts, photographs and much more. Also uncovered were a great many facts. For example, did you know that "one of the first gold discoveries in Idaho Springs, Colorado was made by Henry Parker, a Black mine owner?" Not many people do. This is what the museum does. It educates people on the history of these great people, these brave men and women who helped in many important dates in our timeline.

Guided tours and self-guided tours are available to anyone, especially class field trips. There are many educational opportunities when visiting this museum and the influence of these pioneers is a great find!

The Byers-Evans House in Denver: Old-Fashioned Elegance

The Byers-Evans House in Denver: Old-Fashioned Elegance

Since 1883 the Byers-Evans house has been dazzling visitors with its stately elegance. Built by one of Denver's founding families, the house stands majestically at 1310 Bannock Street. The Byers-Evans house is in good cultural company, sharing the neighborhood with the Denver Art Museum, the Denver Public Library and the Civic Center Cultural Complex.

Throughout the year, many cultural events take place in the Byers-Evans house. From late October through early November, the Hungry Artist's collective performs public readings of some of Edgar Allan Poe's scariest stories. Then, in December, several tea parties will be hosted in the house. These include guided tours through the elegantly-decorated home followed by an old-timey tea party. Call the Denver Historical Society at (303) 893-5438 for details and to make reservations.

The winter holidays are surely the fanciest time to visit and tour the Byers-Evans house. The Denver Historical Society - founded about five years before the Evans house was even built - really decks the halls on this one. Some of the decorations are originals, collected by the first lady of the house, Mrs. William Byers, herself. Mrs Byers was a hostess of exceptional grace and a savvy collector of art. She commissioned Louis Comfort Tiffany to make his signature glass lamps for the home. She was also an avid collector of dining china, having a full set by the Eastlake company specifially for her fancy dinner parties.

The original owner of the house, Willam Byers, was the publisher of The Rocky Mountain News which -one-and-one-quarter centuries later, is still being published daily. Although not the most haunted house in Denver, some say they can hear Mr. Byers pacing upstairs, fretting over a deadline. Go ahead and take the three-dollar tour and listen for yourself. Maybe those carefully-placed footsteps are from other tourists.. maybe not.
