On your next visit to Memphis, make sure to schedule a visit to the Dixon Gallery and Gardens. This amazing facility has become one of Memphis' best known art galleries. The Dixon has an impressive collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings and folk/decorative arts. When the Dixon Gallery opened in 1976, its humble collection consisted of just 26 paintings. Through generous gifts and contributions by estates and individuals, the collection has grown to a massive 2000+ works of art. A few years ago, Warda Stevens Stout donated her Collection of 18th century German Porcelain. This is displayed along with The Adler Pewter Collection, and The Armand Hammer Collection of Daumier Prints. The gardens that are adjacent to the museum were created by the Dixons beginning in 1939. The gardens were carefully carved out of native Tennessee woodlands, with consideration given to the fine old trees, vista views, native Tennesee foliage, and natural climate sequences. There are beautiful private pathways that wind throughout the garden. Spend an afternoon strolling and seeing the rewards all those years of hardwork designing this garden area has produced. The Dixon is a great way to spend an afternoon in Memphis. If you happen to be visiting during the spring or early summer, the garden area will be exploding in color with all the blooming of the flowers. Another good time to see the gardens is during the early autumn when leaves are changing and cool earthtones abound in the garden.

This mansion which was the home to two very prominent Memphis families was gifted to the City of Memphis in 1936 and was vacant for many years. In 1962, The Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities rescued the house which was in a great state of disrepair at this point and restored it to its former splendor. The house was restored, many original pieces remain and other period pieces were acquired to give the house such an authentic feel, you'll swear you've stepped back in time. The Memphis Botanic Gardens have a long history. The gardens were founded in 1819 by John Overton, James Winchester, and Andrew Jackson when they also founded the City of Memphis. Originally the gardens were to be named Bluebird Park but it was decided that the park area would be named after naturalist John James Audubon. There was already a smaller park inside the city named Audubon and a decision was made to call the new park Audubon and the smaller park Bluebird - which is now known as Tobey Park. A great boost was given to the park in 1953 when over 2000 iris rhizomes from the gardens of Mrs. Morgan Ketchum were given to the park and the Ketchum Memorial Iris Garden was created. This marked the beginnings of the planned/donated gardens that now dot the Botonic Gardens. This garden, with its well tended areas and fountain remains a focal point for Garden visitors. An arboretum was established in 1957 to honor W.C. Paul who died in 1951 and who was an active member of the Memphis Men's Garden Club. Mr. Paul had long dreamed of an arboretum for Memphis and after his death, his dream was realized. Another flower donation occurred in 1958 when Mrs. Winston Michie donated over 80 varieties of magnolias in honor of her late husband. That same year a rose garden was added with over 75-species of roses. 1966 brought an outstanding feature being added - the water garden. This is a breathtaking area and often used to photography backdrops. As you walk through the Botanical Gardens today you will see over 100,000 daffodil bulbs line both sides of the stone lined creek beds on in the south east section of the Garden to form the Charlotte Sawyer Daffodil Trail and Daffodil Hill. The latest addition to the garden was a gift to add a 5500 square foot service, production, and display greenhouse - great things are coming to the Botanical Gardens!

It is located in the historic Pink Palace Museum at 3050 Central Avenue. They have three regular features that you can take in, depending on what your preferences are. Under the African Skies is a trip through the varied cultures of the African Continent and learn the folk tales they tell about the night sky and the stars. There is a seasonal presentation, depending on whether it is Fall, Winter, Spring, or Summer, you can see how the night sky looks over the Northern Hemisphere. You can see how ancient people saw the changing of the seasons in the night skies. Another fun presentation at the Sharpe Planetarium is the Cowboy Astronomer. This is done by telling tales told by cowboys as well as Native Americans about the starry skies above. Among the stories that you will hear will be the Fisher story of the cruel chieftain holding the birds of summer captive, the story of the great bear that breathed life into all the stars and the Devil's Tower tale of the Seven Indian Maidens and the Bear - imprinted for all time in the stars above. Make time to stop by the Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum located no the Burkle Estate in Memphis, Tennessee. It's a simple white clapboard house built around 1849 by Jacob Burkle and was a stop along the way for the Underground Railroad. You will see the trap doors and secret cellars that served as an escape route for many slaves. The staff has a reputation for being friendly and accommodating and if you're in the mood for a little libation, the bars are fully loaded with your favorite beers cold on tap as well as a very nice selection of both imports and domestics in bottles. If mixed drinks are your thing - you'll find plenty of those here too, along with a nice martini list. National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis, Tennessee is a unique and historical place of remembrance. It was the first and is the largest museum depicting the struggle of The Civil Rights Movement. The museum was once the Lorraine Motel This where Martin Luther King was standing giving one of his motivational speeches when he was assassinated. A small minority-owned business in downtown Memphis owned and run by Walter Lane Bailey who kept a few rooms as a shrine to Dr. King and to Bailey's wife, Lorraine, who died of a brain hemorrhage just hours after King was shot, and became well known in the area. The museum consists of interactive multimedia exhibits that places you in the civil rights movement and learn its history from the 1600s through Rosa Parks and the freedom riders until today. Interactive displays such as an old city bus that you enter, where upon sitting down you are told to go to the back of the bus. If you are going to be in the Memphis area, be sure that you get a chance to take in all of the wonderfully interesting historical sites. One of the most important and intriguing historical sites in this area would have to be the Motel Lorraine. This is the actual place where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. On the evening of April 4, 1968, the Motel Lorraine came to be the site of one of the most famous assassinations in United States history. When Martin Luther King, Jr. walked out of his room at the motel for dinner, he was shot while leaning over the balcony to talk with his chauffeur. The single shot caused King to fall below where he laid dying. Today, this historic motel is the site of what is known as the National Civil Rights Museum. With the help of many people through donations, the Motel Lorraine now serves as a great educational experience for all who get the chance to visit. The doors of the National Civil Rights Museum opened at the Motel Lorraine location on September 28, 1991. Since its opening, the National Civil Right Museum has had thousands of visitors each year. There have even been expansion projects such as Exploring The Legacy, which explains the movement and the events that happened following the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. at this location. You can still get your own glimpse of the very balcony as it still stands where he fell to his death after the fatal shot at Motel Lorraine.
