Pettigrew Home and Museum

The Pettigrew Home and Museum hosts history about family and social life in the Siouxland in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It allows visitors to get a better idea of the everyday life in Sioux Falls then as compared to modern day. The Pettigrew Home and Museum is one of two Siouxland Heritage Museums that were established to help spread knowledge of Sioux Falls history.

The Pettigrew Home and Museum was originally a simple residence for a former politician. South Dakota's first full-term U.S. Senator, Richard F. Pettigrew, resided here with his family, purchasing this 1889 Queen Anne home a few years after he finished his term. He purchased the home in 1911 and made an arrangement so that the house would be donated to the city upon his death, which occurred in October 1926.

Inside the Pettigrew Home, you can see how the decor gives a glimpse of a political family's life at the turn of the 20th Century. The detailed woodwork and beautiful jeweled glass windows display nothing but exquisite taste. The inside of the Pettigrew Home may only be toured with a guide, so be sure to schedule that before you arrive.

Museum exhibitions are numerous at the Pettigrew Home and Museum. They cover Sioux Falls history from the late 1800's to 1920. Included in the galleries are an introductory video running approximately 11 minutes, interactive computer stations, and many artifacts and photos.

Admission to the Pettigrew Home and Museum is free.

If you are looking to find information about Sioux Falls and South Dakota's first full-term senator, the Pettigrew House and Museum is a great place to start.

The Horse Barn Arts Center

The Horse Barn Arts Center is located in Falls Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It was built in the late 1800's, but no one is exactly sure what its purpose was supposed to be. In the 1930's the barn was acquired by the city of Sioux Falls and used for storage. In 1998, it was decided that the barn should be put to better use, and in 1999 the Horse Barn Arts Center was born.

The Horse Barn Arts Center displays all kinds of works, from sculptures and paintings to pottery and ceramics. There are two separate galleries at the Horse Barn Arts Center. The Loft Gallery, in the hayloft of the barn of course, plays host to a different exhibit each month. The artwork on display is by local and regional artists. The Portfolio Gallery is on the main level of the Horse Barn Arts Center, and it is dedicated to the display of local artists' works. The work is displayed on a rotating basis so that all of the artists' exhibits can be viewed in a fair manner. Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum

The Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum are two great learning experiences in one location. While the Great Plains Zoo has plenty of live animals to see, while the Delbridge Museum contains collections of mounted animals from five continents. Both places offer a plethora of information on animals and their habitats.

The Great Plains Zoo sits on forty-five acres of land. Over five hundred animals from around the world are featured here in simulated natural habitats. While visiting the Great Plains Zoo, you not only can learn about the animals' habitats, but also what they eat, their size, how they reproduce, and how they protect themselves from predators. You can view all kinds of animals from parrots and flamingos to cheetahs and zebras. There is even a children's zoo where you can get face-to-face with some of the animals.

The Delbridge Museum is named after C.J. Delbridge who bought the collection of mounted animals from Henry Brockhouse and donated it to the city of Sioux Falls. Mr. Delbridge's donation was contingent upon the city agreeing to build a suitable institution to house the collection. It is presumed that most of the animals in the Delbridge Museum were mounted between the mid-1950's and 1976 because that is when Henry Brockhouse did most of his hunting.

Don't forget to stop at the Zootopia Gift Shop before leaving the Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum so that you can pick up a souvenir from your adventure.

Admission to the Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum is approximately $7 for adults and $4 for children; however, children under the age of two are admitted free.

Falls Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Falls Park is the most visited site in all of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Born from the Big Sioux River, the Falls are a place of natural beauty and history. In fact, Sioux Falls was so named because the reputation of the mystic, inspiring Falls had reached land speculators from afar and they came to claim the land for a town.

Not only will you find the natural beauty in Falls Park, but you can take advantage of newly built visitor amenities and a family-friendly environment. The Falls Park Visitor Information Center has a five-story viewing tower that has an outdoor observation deck which allows you to view a great deal of Falls Park. Also inside Falls Park is a sculpture named "Monarch of the Plains," which was sculpted from mahogany granite that was mined in the Milbank area of South Dakota. Falls Park holds a sound and light show around the Falls at night that helps convey the cultural heritage of Sioux Falls.

Self-guided walking tours of Falls Park are aided by interpretive panels that are place throughout the park. They help tell the stories of how Sioux Falls and Falls Park share a bond in history. In addition to the descriptions, some of the panels display vintage photographs to help give visitors a visual idea of Falls Park throughout the years. These panels share many fascinating facts about Falls Park and about the Falls themselves.

Another attraction in Falls Park is the Horse Barn Arts Center. This place has two galleries -- one on the main floor and one in the former hayloft -- which display works by local and regional artists. Artist demonstrations, hands-on activities, classes, and workshops are also offered at the Arts Center.

Board the Sioux Falls trolley and travel from Falls Park through downtown Sioux Falls. Enjoy the unique shops and fine dining in the downtown area of Sioux Falls. Take the trolley back to Falls Park and enjoy the sound and light show before you leave.

European Roulette: A Classy Game

The game of European roulette is very popular in casinos because the players have better odd of winning than in American roulette. The rules of European roulette are virtually the same as with the American version except with a few changes. The action of the game is left up to the dealer who simply spins the roulette wheel and spins a ball in the opposite direction. The only role of the player is to place bets. The only difference between American roulette and European roulette is that the European wheel has one less slot; it does not have the 00 number.

The following are the types of bets you can place in either American or European roulette. For the most part these bets are self-explanatory. There are two different categories, inside and outside bets.

The inside bets are as follows: straight bets, split bets, three-number bets, four-number bets, five-number bets, and six-line bets.

The outside bets are as follows: red bets, black bets, even bets, odd bets, low bets, high bets, dozen bets, and column bets.

That's all there is to the game of European roulette. European roulette is popular in casinos because it requires very little strategy and the odds are better than American roulette because of the one less slot. This is a game of chance; it is all left up to the ball in the end. Do not play the game of European roulette if you are a person who needs to have all control in a situation. You have very little control in European roulette, nobody does.

Prehistoric flashback at Dinosaur Park near Rapid City

Dinosaur Park was originally developed and built in 1936 by the City of Rapid City and the Works Progress Administration, and it is now listed on the national register of historic places at the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Emmett A. Sullivan along with the help from several South Dakota Natural History buffs, made five life-sized concrete dinosaurs that accurately depicted the knowledge of dinosaurs at that time. Dinosaur Park is located in a prime spot on top of one of the many hills that surround the town of Rapid City. This spot features some phenomenal views of the city and surrounding areas.

It is believed that Dinosaur Park's sculptures were originally gray, but now they are painted a vivid green, with touches of pinkish red. All of the dinosaurs at Dinosaur Park were built to their actual size, and they have become quite a sight when visiting Rapid City. The largest of the dinosaurs is the Brontosaurus, and it is easily seen for many miles.

Dinosaur Park, with its towering stone creatures, has become a local landmark. Kids of all ages will love climbing on these massive creatures. At Dinosaur Park there are many opportunities for one of a kind family photographs with towering mammals in the background. It is a must see for anyone visiting the Black Hills area.

The dinosaurs are lit up until 10 pm during tourist season and there is a gift shop at the base of the hill. Dinosaur Park is open year round and is free to the public.

Center for Western Studies

The Center for Western Studies is located in the Fantle Building at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history and cultures of the Northern Plains. The Center for Western Studies has collections of paintings, manuscripts, personal papers, and photographs that depict the history of South Dakota and the American West.

Some of the exhibits on display at the Center for Western Studies are not necessarily what you might think of as the history of the Northern Plains. For example, there is one exhibit containing photographs of rock and roll bands from the 1950's and 60's. The reason they are considered part of this history and culture is that they originated in the Sioux Falls area. It is great to keep an open mind when visiting the Center for Western Studies. You never know what surprises may lie in store. Previous exhibits have included various Sioux Falls area wildlife art, paintings depicting life in South Dakota throughout history, and other works created by regional artists. During the course of the display of each exhibit at the Center for Western Studies, a reception and talk is held so that visitors may discuss the works with the artists who created them.

The Center for Western Studies also contains a research library where over 35,000 books and periodicals are held. They are form the personal collections of local notables such as historian Richard Cropp and photographer Alan Woolworth. These writings focus on the American West, American literature, and American Indian lifestyle. Records held by the Center for Western Studies have even contributed to the retelling of the expedition of Lewis and Clark.

The Center for Western Studies is open year-round Monday through Saturday and admission is free (except to use the archives).
