Located in Charleston's historic downtown, the American Theater opened in 1942 and was named to honor the service men, war workers and Americans across the nation. It served as one of the few premiere movie houses in Charleston with a small stage, projectors and sound equipment. Due to the popularity of the theater, 200 seats were added after and the stage was enlarged only five years of business.

Changes came in the 1960's when attendance was low and the theater struggled to continue after the introduction of the television. In 1977, the theater finally closed its doors, standing vacant until purchased in 1997.

While in Charleston, you should make a stop at the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. Founded in 1676, these gardens are America's internationally famous and America's oldest gardens. There are over 50 acres with wonderful flowers such as magnolias, azaleas, camellias and hundreds of other blooming species that exude relaxation and restfulness.

They also have a 125 acre waterfowl refuge, an herb garden, nature trails, topiary gardens a petting zoo, biblical gardens, a maze and an observation tower. You can even rent canoes and bicycles or picnic in one of the designated areas.

The "Long White Bridge" has become the main symbol of the Plantation and it's gardens. Although it's not the only bridge throughout the gardens, there are 7 others of various designs, the Long Bridge has been top of the list for 150 years.

The horticultural maze within the gardens has been planted with over 500 large Camellia and some holly which is absolutely beautiful when viewed in the fall months. Founded around 1681 by Huguenot refugees from the Protestant persecutions in France, the first French Huguenot Church was built in 1687 on its present site. As an attempt to stop a spreading fire, the church was destroyed in 1769 with the replacement of the original building being completed in 1800. In 1844 the church was dismantled and was replaced by the present Gothic Revival edifice which was designed by Edward Brickell White.

During the War Between the States, the church sustained damaged by shellfire during the long bombardment of downtown Charleston. In 1886, an earthquake nearly demolished the church once again. The present building dates to 1845.

A tracker organ, carved in the style and shape of a Gothic chapel was purchased and installed in 1845. This type of organ is unique as the keys are connected with the pipe valves by a wooden "tracker" or mechanical linkage. This technique responds to the organist's touch and is considered faster than any modern technology available. Federal soldiers dismantled the organ and were loading it on a New York-bound ship after the fall of Charleston in 1865. Pleas from the organist and friends save the organ and it now remains within the church.

As the only remaining independent French Huguenot Church in the nation, weekly services are offered in English with liturgy being used that dates back to 1737 and 1772. Services and communion are open to all believers which wish to partake. The church is governed by the Board of Directors and the Board of Elders with the Calvinist doctrine in place today, just as it was with the early founders of the church.

The Aiken-Rhett House is one of the most popular attractions in Charleston, South Carolina. Built around 1817 originally for a merchant named John Robinson. It was a typical "Charleston double house" at the time he owned it and is said that he was forced to sell the house to meet financial obligations in 1825.

This impressive residence was bought by William Aiken Sr. in 1827 and then passed to his son and new bride in 1833. It was enlarged and then redecorated by the Governor and his wife, Mrs. William Aiken Jr. around the 1830's and then again in the 1850's. The changes the William Jr. and his wife Harriet made to the house was said to make the house "one of the most impressive residences in Charleston." Many of the beautiful treasures found in their home were brought back from their traveling trips to Europe. Such things included paintings, classical sculptures and even bronze chandeliers. Most of these treasures are still in the rooms that they were purchased for.

Although WIlliam Aiken Jr. was Governor and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, we cannot forget that he was also one of the states largest slaveholders. There were said to be about 12 slaves that maintained his palatial house and probably more than 700 at his rice plantation located on the South Edisto River.

Conservation has been of utmost importance for the Aiken-Rhett House and because of this, it's been virtually unaltered since about 1858 and attracts all walks of life. Tickets are very reasonable and they even feature an "audio tour," the only one in Charleston.

The Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Synagogue is known as the country's second oldest synagogue, the oldest one in continual use, and is a National Historic Landmark. It was established in 1749 and is recognized as the fourth oldest Jewish community.

Beginning as an Orthodox community, it became the largest Jewish community in the nation at the end of the 18th century with a membership of 500. The congregation's first synagogue was destroyed in 1838 by a fire and the existing synagogue was built in 1840. The current synagogue shows the Greek Revival style as parts are adapted from classic Greek Doric temple. This synagogue is situated on Hasell Street, while the first synagogue was a smaller building on Union Street. Several of the founders of the first congregation came from Georgia.

Beth Elohim had nearly 200 members supporting the Reform Movement in 1833 when a temporary split of the congregation took place. In 1841 the majority of the congregation was embracing Reform Judaism with modernized rituals. At this time, Beth Elohim formally became the first American Reform congregation that to this day, still serves the Reform Judaism community. A small museum contains artifacts about the history of the congregation can also be seen.

A Jewish individual was mentioned as serving as an interpreter for Governor Archdale in 1695, which is the earliest record of a Jew in Charleston, although Jews had probably settled in the area much earlier. Portuguese Jews made up the primary portion of the earliest known congregation, although by 1786 the German-Jewish population was also very well known.

Charles Towne is where the first permanent English settlement can be found. It was founded in 1670 and displays animals that were native to the state at that time in their animal forest.

The animal forest is a 22 acre natural habitat zoo where you can find animals like alligators bison, bobcats, foxes, cougars, bears, elk, wolves, white tailed deer and more.

There is even a life-sized replica of a coastal trader vessel called the Adventure. You can tour the landing site as well and watch archaeologists work at the site. Past discoveries that have been found there were of household items and artifacts, vineyards, ceremonial centers and camp sites.

Bike trails and walkways provide a different view to the area, putting you right in the midst of everything. You can even rent a bike if you haven't brought your own, or roller skate or jog. People have even been known to have a seat right in the middle of it all and have a picnic. Prices are entirely reasonable and they're open daily so you can decide whether to go early morning or any other time during the day without feeling as though you've missed something.

When you make plans to visit Charles Towne Landing, you should make sure that you have plenty of film and plenty of time to spend the day exploring because there is so much to see. The park is very peaceful letting you disappear from all the city bustle and the forest is lush enough to make you forget about the modern world for awhile. It makes a perfect day trip.

This is where you can find out everything that there is to know about The Citadel, otherwise known at The Military College of South Carolina. Since it was founded back in 1842, there are many things that have happened or changed along the way. This can be a great learning experience for anyone, whether you are a military buff or not.

Through this wonderful museum, you will have all kinds of opportunities to view the many permanent exhibits that will tell you all about the aspects of the life of a cadet. Learn about everything through wonderful photographs and various memorabilia such as cadet uniforms and more. There is also a nice series of photographs of some of the men from The Citadel that have lost their lives during previous wars.

It is also quite a unique experience to look through the archives at The Citadel. Some of the things that you will find include letters, speeches, reports, diaries, and more. There are also several sets of photographs, videotapes and films that you may view.

The hours that you can check out the museum are from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm Sunday through Friday and 12:00 noon until 5:00 pm on Saturday. If you would like a museum tour, they are self-guided in nature, however group tours can be arranged prior to your visit. Archive hours are from 8:30 am until 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. There are regular closings for both on all of the major national holidays.

For a bit of nature and wildlife during your travels through South Dakota, you should take a trip along Wildlife Loop Road. This is a gorgeous stretch of road that winds its way through Custer State Park. Just imagine riding through Wildlife Loop Road looking around at all of the rolling hills and wide open grassland. It is quite a treat to be looking out of the car window and noticing many of the wildlife species that live in the park. At any given time, it is not uncommon for visitors to view animals such as birds, bighorn sheep, buffalo, deer, coyote, elk, antelope and prairie dog. You really want to make sure that you have your camera ready with lots of film on hand for this journey on Wildlife Loop Road. It would be a shame if you missed getting a shot of the buffalo crossing the road just a few hundred feet away from your vehicle. This would not be uncommon seeing how Wildlife Loop Road winds through the park that is known to be home to a buffalo herd that is one of the largest in the world.

A ride through Custer Park on Wildlife Loop Road is about 18 miles, which you can plan on taking you approximately 30 minutes from start to finish. There is a requirement of a South Dakota State Park Entrance License for all vehicles. You may want to give yourself a few extra minutes to obtain a temporary license to ride through Wildlife Loop Road if you do not already have one.

Did you know that while you are in gorgeous Columbia, South Carolina, you can visit the Woodrow Wilson Family Home? This is a great little excursion that can be both fun and educational for your entire family. The Wilson House is located on 1705 Hampton Street and is filled with all kinds of neat items and rich history. No trip to Columbia would be complete without a stop by this historic location.

This cottage style house, which was built way back in 1872, was the only home that the Wilson family had ever owned. The house itself is quite an amazing structure, complete with spacious rooms with high ceilings. All around the grounds are beautiful gardens and landscaping. A few of the focal points of the landscaping would have to be the magnolia trees in front of the house that were actually planted by Jessie Woodrow Wilson.

Back in 1928, the Wilson House was actually slated for demolition, but thankfully was saved by a movement of people who were determined to save it. A few years later, in 1932, the Woodrow Wilson Family Home opened up to the general public as a wonderful museum, commemorating the life and history of the building. Now, people from all around enjoy visiting the Wilson house so that they can view the lovely structure along with the furnishings and artifacts inside. One of the more interesting objects in the house would have to be the birth bed. This is the actual bed that Woodrow Wilson was born in on December 28, 1856 in Staunton, Virginia.

This is a lovely place to see, especially if you are looking to take in a bit of the rich history of the state. The State House took a whopping 56 years to build from start to finish, due to problems with architects and war amongst other things. This can be an outing that will be interesting and educational for the whole family.

Once you feast your eyes upon this building, you are immediately struck by its beauty and architecture. Just learning about the entire process of how it was constructed in a whole learning experience within itself. Then, once you delve a bit further into the history of this building and all that it stands for, you realize why this makes such an important stop during your visit to Columbia, South Carolina.

During a visit to the State House in Columbia, many people really enjoy looking around at all of the beautiful monuments and markers located on the grounds. One monument is an actual cannon from the Battleship Maine. The Spanish American War of 1898 began due to the sinking of this ship. Another really interesting monument to see is the Columbia Time Capsule. This time capsule was filled with different items and artifacts on December 31, 1986 and is not to be opened until March 22, 2036, which is the 250th birthday of Columbia.
