See the Historic Whitehall Museum House

Built in early 1700s by the renowned Irish philosopher and educator, Bishop George Berkeley, the Whitehall Museum House has undergone several restorations throughout the years. Berkeley purchased the 96 acres of farmland while waiting for funds he was to use to establish a college in Bermuda. When the funds did not arrive, Berkeley returned to Ireland, leaving the estate to Yale College.

The Whitehall Museum House was used by Yale College to rent to tenants. During the Revolution, the Whitehall house was used to house British soldiers. Five generations of one family farmed the land for the next 100 years, finally deserting it in 1880.

Three women purchased the abandoned house in 1997 and after extensive repairs were made, the Whitehall Museum House was given to The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in 1900. The Whitehall Museum House took with it a condition that it be maintained by the National Society as a memorial to Bishop Berkeley.

After numerous restorations, the Whitehall Museum House now exhibits period furnishings with a garden maintained by the Newport Garden Club. The house is an unusual hip-roof building and a sloping lean-to across the back. The herb garden and furnishings resemble the period of 1729-1731 when it was occupied by Berkeley. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Whitehall Museum House has been opened to the public during the summer hours since 1900. Currently, the Whitehall Museum House is open from July 1 through August 31 from Tuesday through Sunday 10am to 5pm. Admission for adults is $3 while children 6-12 are admitted for only $1.

The Towers

Once described as the heart of life in Narragansett, the Towers used to house the Pier Casino. Offering boating, billiards, bowling, cards, shooting, tennis and other sports, The Towers served as an evening attraction for many. Also housed in The Towers were stores, reading rooms, a theater, restaurants, bandstand and a ballroom.

Once considered to be the place in town for nightlife activities and fun, changed drastically on September 12, 1900 when a fire broke out in the Rockingham Hotel, and quickly spread to the Casino. Within a few short hours, it was all gone. The only part of the Towers that remained standing was the granite walls. By 1910, The Towers had been rebuilt and renovated, and was once again open for business, but the excitement offered at The Towers had faded.

The Towers held up against three separate hurricanes, but was again damaged by a fire in 1965. The strength of The Towers appeared to be indestructible. Once again, the city of Narragansett had to make a decision about what to do with the building that had attracted so many people over the years.

Today, The Towers still stand with their elegant architecture that draws people from all walks of life. The newly renovated Towers have been enclosed which allow for concerts, dances and business meeting on a year around basis. The porch overlooking the ocean was also restored. With the enclosed feature of the Towers and an elevator making accessibility easier, the city of Narragansett has once again begun attracting visitors to their area as they before the first fire destroyed The Towers.

The South County Museum is among one of the popular attractions in Rhode Island. Exhibits at the museum have assisted in keeping the history of the rural, village, and maritime heritage of this area from being lost in a world filled with technology.

Charter A Bus In New York City

The capital of the world, New York City, as you may know, is a huge city where many tourists are attracted to. Some people dream of one day being able to visit New York City. On the other hand there are many people that visit it everyday and their lives revolve around New York City. There are many different attractions and places to visit in New York City. You may only like to visit the places you are interested in. Many places, such as, Times Square, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, and many more attract tourist from all over the world.

The Empire State Building, located on 350 5th Ave is 1,453 feet, 8 9/16 inches from the base to the top of the lightning rod. There are 1,860 steps from the street level to the 102nd floor. Ten to twenty thousand people visit the Empire State Building every day. The Empire State Building is designed as a lightning rod for the area, and is hit by lightning about one hundred times a year. The lights on the top of the Empire State Building change colors for holidays and special occasions. The admission for the Empire State Building is inexpensive, the most expensive ticket which, is an adult from the ages of eighteen to sixty one, is $15.50, and the cheapest ticket is $10.50 for a child. There are also free admissions for toddlers under the age of five, and military in uniform.

The Statue of Liberty is another main tourist attraction. It is located on the Hudson River on Liberty Island. The only way to get there is by ferry, which the most expensive ticket is an adult ticket which cost $11.50. The Statue of Liberty was shipped from France to New York in 350 pieces and took four months to put together. Near the statue there is also Ellis Island, which is another tourist attraction. Tours and entrance are free to the Statue of Liberty, but you must pay for the ferry. Rockefeller Center is also another great attraction, especially during the Christmas Holidays. Rockefeller Center is located between 5th and 7th avenues and 47th and 50th streets. Rockefeller Center is the home of NBC, the Today Show, Saturday Night Live and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. During the holidays there is a beautiful, huge Christmas tree in the center plaza which overlooks the ice skating rink below. Also, around the corner is Radio City Music Hall, also very famous during the holidays because of their wonderful show with the famous Rockettes. The American Museum of Natural History is a great place to visit if you are interested in history. There is a lot to see for a good price. It Is open every day from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Some of the exhibits that are there everyday include some of the museum's finest gems, birds, bones, and many more. The museum is located at Central Park West at West 79th Street.

Central Park has over 800 acres of park land in the middle of Manhattan. It opened in the winter of 1859 and was the first artificially landscaped park in the United States. Central Park is a great place for picnicking, listening to music and exploration. There are also many free events at Central Park especially in the summer. There are restaurants, hotels, shops, and tours at the park.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art located on 1000 Fifth Ave and 82nd Street. You can appreciate art for the price of $10.00 and under at the museum. The Egyptian Art collection includes works of art from 300,000 B.C. to 4th Century A.D. There are also musical instruments, modern art and the Cloisters. This museum attracts more visitors than any other New York City attraction, about five million per year. This museum's collections are so big, it is impossible to see all the attractions in a one day, so it is recommended to choose an area or two interests. Another museum, the Museum of Modern Art, located on 11 West 53rd St, was the first museum to focus on modern art. The museum's permanent collection features 135,000 paintings, prints, photographs, drawings, sculptures, films and design objects. The price for the museum is $20.00 and under.

One of my favorite places to visit in New York City is Times Square. Filled with lights, people, and excitement it is the perfect place to be. There are many different movie theaters such as the Lowe's Theater, and the AMC. There is the very famous Madam Tussaud's Wax Museum, the Yankee Store, Cold Stone ice cream parlor, and many more. Cold Stone is the ice cream parlor of everyone's dreams. There you choose whatever ice cream flavor you like and they mix it and put whatever toppings you want, anything you can imagine from sprinkles to gummy bears, fudge pieces, anything you can imagine. There are also many hotels there if you want to stay overnight. There is the Toys R Us store with the famous Ferris wheel inside the store. All the billboards, Broadway plays, anything you want see there is in Times Square. There is the Virgin Store, for those who want to shop for music, books, and more. There are many restaurants and bars for you to choose from. The ESPN store is also located in Times Square. Also, a great thing about Times Square is that the best way to travel there is by bus. The bus terminal is right in Times Square.

In New York City we can not forget about Madison Square Garden. Madison Square Garden is the host of many concerts and events, and also some sports. Madison Square Garden, located on 33rd Street and 7th Avenue, holds many events all year around. It is also the home of the New York Knicks. Bus traveling is a good option in visiting the Garden because the parking is incredibly expensive. The lowest rate for parking is $30 an hour. Also, there are drinks sold at the events, and drunk driving is against the law.

Another big tourist attraction is Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Home of my favorite team, the Yankee Stadium is visited by many each season. Another stadium across town is the Shea Stadium, home of the New York Mets, in Queens. There are also many visitors to the Mets Stadium each season. Baseball fans from all over New York and even New Jersey and other states come and visit these stadiums. New York City is the home of the very famous Copacabana. Located on 560 West 34th Street and 11th Avenue, the Copacabana is recognized as New York's most elegant night club. There are different events held each night at Copacabana. On Thursdays, it is the Copa College Party, which is a party every Thursday night for college students. Tuesday and Saturday nights are Tropical nights. To visit Copacabana, it would be best to travel by bus because it is a nightclub and most likely you will be drinking, and you will not have to drive if you are traveling by bus.

Another site that is great to visit is Ground Zero. Ground Zero is the site where the Twin Towers were before 9/11. It is a great experience to visit Ground Zero to see what is left and the new upcoming plans for the new World Trade Center. Tourists can also visit Carnegie Hall. Carnegie Hall is located on 154 West 57th Street. It offers many activities such as family concerts, programs for teachers and schools, professional training workshops, and many more. For those who are religious, they can visit St. Patrick's Cathedral. It is located on 5th Avenue between 50th and 51st streets. With its beautiful structure and history it is great for anyone to visit and admire. South Street Seaport, located on East River at the foot of Fulton St, is great to admire and to be near the water. There are many restaurants and stores to visit at the Seaport.

In the Bronx, there are two main attractions that many tourists visit each year, the Bronx Zoo and the Botanical Garden. The Bronx Zoo is the heart of the Wildlife Conservation Society. There is an immense diversity of animals at the zoo. From gorillas in the Congo Gorilla Forest, to the snow leopards in the Himalayan Highlands Habitat, and the tropical animals in the indoor Asian rain forest, the Bronx Zoo is an excellent place to visit with your families. The Botanical Garden has many activities for families. It is the perfect place to visit to enjoy nature and to explore the different types of flowers and plants there are that you may not even know of. It would be convenient to travel on bus instead of driving. When you are driving there a lot of things you have to deal with. The most important one is parking. Everyone knows how hard it is to find parking in New York City and how expensive it is. It is almost impossible to find parking in New York City especially in tourist areas. The places where you do find parking, it is way too expensive. Another factor is that your time is more limited when you are driving because you are worried about how long you parked for, or the area where you are parked. Also, there is the fact that you do not want to drink and drive. So if you come across a place where you would like to have a drink, you will not be able to if you are driving. There is not always someone who offers to be designated driver.

There are many companies that offer tours of the city. This way instead of driving and probably getting lost you have tour guides showing you exactly where everything is. Some touring companies even let you get off the bus, and spend as much time as you like at any certain attractions, and then you just catch the next bus, or whichever bus you want to take on the schedule. This way if you want to take a little more time at one place, you do not have to worry about getting left behind from the tour bus. Also, you do not have to worry about driving.

The Battle of Gettysburg site has been preserved for years, beginning with citizen from that time, and since 1933, preservation has been in the hands of the National Park Service. The park plans to rehabilitate the battlefield landscape from the time of the Battle of Gettysburg.

During the Battle of Gettysburg, the building that houses the Soldiers National Museum, served as the headquarters for General O.O. Howard. From the end of the Battle of Gettysburg to 1977, the same building served as the home of the National Soldiers Orphan Homestead. Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge

What started out as a horse racing area, and then a Naval communication site, the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge is a great place for families vacationing in the area, or for anyone just out sightseeing for the day. Located between the Sakonnet River and Second Beach, numerous trails lead you through the area with trailside exhibits along the way.

Prior to the 1800’s Sachuest Point was used mainly for sheep grazing and farming. The Navy took over the site during World War II and used the land as a rifle range and communication center. In 1970 the Audubon Society of Rhode Island began the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge.

The Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge is home to over 200 species of birds during any given year. Prescott Farms

Prescott Farms is a 40 acre farm that features the long history of farming on Aquidneck Island. The farm offers visitors a chance to travel back into the early 18th century for a glimpse of early New England buildings and landscape. Doris Duke, through the Newport Restoration Foundation, purchased the farm with the goal of preserving open space and the Overing House as well as other rural buildings that were in danger of being lost as a result of demolition.

The Prescott Farms feature Colonial farm building, a general store, General Prescott's guard house. The farm site is open to the public and includes several buildings, a pond and several walking trails. Five of the eleven buildings currently on the site have their original foundations. Bring the family out for a day of touring history, or head out to Prescott Farms yourself for a day. Among the restored features of Prescott Farms, you'll see one of the most unusual windmills in the area. The smock style mill was originally built in 1812 and has four vanes for sails. General Prescott's guard house is among the buildings open to the public. This house was used by the guards of General Prescott during his occupation of Overing House. The visitor's center at Prescott Farms was known as the Hicks House - Country Store where it is thought to have been used by the ferrymen who operated between ports. The center displays a collection 18th and early 19th century rural oddments.

Prescott Farms also consists of the Sweet House which is a farmhouse with simple interior woodwork. It serves as an example of simple rural island architecture. The Overing House and Potter House also occupy areas on the land of the Prescott Farms but are not available for access by the public as these properties are rented.

Prescott Farms also offers numerous education programs throughout the season. Two of these projects are the Stone Wall Workshop and Garden Talks. More information on the educational programming available at Prescott Farms can be obtained by contacting the Newport Restoration Foundation, 401-849-7300. Point Judith Lighthouse

Located on the west side of the entrance to Narragansett Bay stands the local attraction of the Point Judith Lighthouse. In 1810 the first lighthouse was built on Point Judith, but was destroyed by a hurricane just five years later. A year later a new 35 foot stone lighthouse was built with a revolving light. The new lighthouse was cold and damp and the bedroom for the keeper was in the attic of the keeper’s house.

The area near Point Judith Lighthouse is a dangerous one for vessels traveling, and despite the lighthouse’s revolving light, wrecks continued to happen. In 1857 another new lighthouse was built on Point Judith. This one was 51 feet high and was made from brownstone and brick. This is the lighthouse that still stands today. Constructed in an octagonal shape, the structure was fitted with a fourth-order Fresnel lens for the light. This lens also remains in place today at the Point Judith Lighthouse.

In 1867 a hot-air engine was installed to power the Daboll trumpet fog signal. A radio beacon was established at Point Judith in 1931, making it the first Rhode Island lighthouse to have such a beacon. The great hurricane of 1938 did little damage to the Point Judith Lighthouse, although 250 feet of the seawall was destroyed. Many changes took place on Point Judith over the 70 years.

Point Judith Lighthouse underwent major restoration in 2000 which should allow the lighthouse and buildings remain in excellent condition for years to come. Today the Point Judith Lighthouse remains an active Coast Guard station with the grounds being open during the day to the public.

A Tour of New York City

A Tour of New York City

New York City is the greatest city in the world; however I take it for granted because I see it everyday. New York City has five boroughs. There are many things to see in each borough. In order to see every good thing in each borough, it would take you a very long time. Nevertheless, the amount of time it would take is definitely worth it. Manhattan's most obvious tourist attraction is Empire State Building. The Empire State Building stands over a thousand feet tall. It offers historical information and a small movement ride. It has a gift shop close to the top floor. Plus it has the obvious brilliant view, which is mind blowing at night when all the lights of the city are on.

You can also visit the Chrysler building in Manhattan. This stainless steel skyscraper is full of great sites. You can see the gargoyles and the beautiful African marble lobby. The Chrysler Building was built during the Great Depression in 1931. Yearly, over 3 and a half million people visit the observatory in the building. The United Nations' half curved building is famous throughout the world. It is located on a large eighteen acre compound. This is an extremely important place. Many important issues have been discussed and many problems have been resolved in that historic building.

There are many beautiful parks to visit in Manhattan. Two are Battery Park and Central Park. Battery Park used to be home to Manhattan's defenses. It offers both recreation and museums. You can visit the Castle Clinton National Monument and the Museum of Jewish Heritage at Battery Park. Central Park is a world-famous park. It was created in 1853. With over 840 acres of land, it has recreational areas, plus much more. It has theater, a zoo, two museums, food, and entertainment. You can also take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the park.

There are also many museums in Manhattan. The Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum is a ship that contains a museum. The Intrepid is docked on the Hudson River. The museum contains sea, air, and space exhibits. You can explore things like the flight deck of the Intrepid and the submarine Growler. You can also visit the American Museum of Natural History. This is one of the greatest museums in the world. It displays scientific research and education. It contains over thirty-two million specimens and artifacts. It also has a great dinosaur exhibit, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

There are also many theaters in Manhattan. The Apollo Theater has been open since 1939. It continues to showcase musical and comedic performances. Aretha Franklin and Billie Holiday have performed there. Furthermore, amateur talent is showcased at The Apollo. Carnegie Hall is one of the greatest concert halls in the world. Many famous and popular artists have performed there as well. It has also hosted ballets, operas, and theater shows. It is great for anyone's taste. You can listen to music, view shows, and see opera. Radio City Music Hall was opened in 1932. It features many musical performances. Over the years, it has become known as an icon of American culture. The Rockettes are a well known dance group that has become a familiar name at Radio City Music Hall.

You can also visit Broadway to see some great plays. Many plays have been featured there. Two examples of current plays on Broadway are Phantom of the Opera and Wicked. You can also visit Times Square, which is also beautiful. While there, you could shop at one of the largest Toys R Us stores in the world. It features amusement rides, as well as a great shopping experience. Madison Square Garden is a great arena in Manhattan. You can attend a show, the circus, or a sporting event there. The New York Knicks and New York Rangers call 'The Garden' their home. They are New York's basketball and hockey teams, respectively. Boxing matches are frequently held there as well. You can find any type of attraction to visit in Manhattan.

Brooklyn is a borough of the city with many tourist attractions. One of them is the Brooklyn Bridge. It was completed in 1883. In 1883, it was the world's longest suspension bridge and the tallest structure in the city. Walking across the bridge is a great New York experience. Brooklyn also has many forms of sports and entertainment. The Brooklyn Cyclones recently brought baseball back to the borough. They are a minor league organization of the New York Mets. You can also visit Coney Island, which has an amusement park and a beach. The Riegleman Boardwalk is also a great historic site to visit. They also now have a great new waterfront parks. When in Brooklyn you can enjoy many cultures. With many cultures you can also expect many great foods. You can enjoy the food of Asia, South and Central America, Europe, and the Carribean. Brooklyn is a center of culture worth seeing.

The Bronx is also a great place to visit. In the Bronx you can visit the zoo, parks, and historical places. You can visit Edgar Allen Poe's cottage and learn about him. The Bronx Zoo is great for anybody. It is the largest urban zoo in the United States. You can see over six thousand animals within its two hundred sixty five acres. It includes parks woods and streams. Another place to visit is the New York Botanical Garden. The garden has many varieties of trees. It not only has trees, but other plants. Yankee Stadium is also a great place to visit. The park opened in 1923. It is the home of the New York Yankees. You can buy a great seat in the bleachers. It is relatively inexpensive, priced at about 15 dollars. The Bronx seems like a very interesting place to visit.

There are also many tourist attractions in the Queens borough of New York City, including the Unisphere and the Panorama of NYC. The Unisphere is a great globe in Flushing Meadow Park. It is considered the symbol of Queens. It is also a great place to spend time and relax. The New York Mets play their Major League Baseball games at Shea Stadium, which is in the Flushing section of Queens. This is a great family atmosphere to watch a game. It is also easy to get to the stadium, both by car and train. Queens is a great place to visit to have a relaxing and fun day.

Traveling through the five boroughs of New York is a great way to have fun. Going on a tour of New York is a remarkable experience. A way to make it even better is taking a limo-bus with your family. A limo-bus allows you to have fun with your family and not worry about going from one place to the next. You would not have to find parking or walk to your destinations. Plus, you would not have to pay for New York parking. You can also see all of the beautiful scenery in the comfort of a bus. I would recommend taking a limo-bus if you plan to see a lot of tourist attractions in a short amount of time or if you are new to experiencing the city.
