Schriver House Museum

The Schriver House Museum offers visitors a unique perspective and history of the Battle of Gettysburg with tours of this award winning home. Guides direct tourists through this four floor describing the civilian experiences of the Shriver family during the Battle of Gettysburg.

In 1860, George Shriver purchased the land that he would build a home on for his wife and children. Now known as the Schriver House Museum, this ordinary home would soon become part of history. In April 1861, as the Civil War broke out, George and his wife, Hettie, settled into their new home. In September, 1861, George joined in the fighting and served as part of Company C of Cole’s Cavalry.

On July 1, 1863, as the Battle of Gettysburg began, Hettie made plans to take the children to her parents’ farm three miles south. Six days later, Hettie returned to her home with her children. It was at this time Hettie was told the Confederate soldiers had occupied her home while she was gone. Through the accounts of her neighbors, Hettie also was told that at least two sharpshooters were killed while stationed in the attic of her home. George was taken a prisoner on January 1, 1864 near Rectortown, Virginia.

The Schriver House underwent many changes, and was almost condemned, before it was restored into what is now the Schriver House Museum. In 1905, the Shriver House was made into a duplex and apartments which over time, would damage the house’s structure. In 1996 a private party purchased the home and began intense restoration process without the help of pubic funding.

The Schriver House Museum has won numerous awards for restorations, preservation and interpretations. Located in the heart of Gettysburg’s historical district, the history of Schriver House Museum is revealed to visitors through thirty minute tours.

New York City

There’s a reason why people consider New York City to be the center of the world as well as the melting pot of America. New York City is a prime location for commerce, the arts, and museums. It has many historical aspects to it as well as some modern ones. For example, the city has many historical sites such as: the Natural Museum of History, the Metropolitan Museum of art, the Statue of Liberty, and the Guggenheim museum. It also has many modern sites such as, Times Square, wild nightlife, restaurants, the Wax Museum, and Broadway.

Times Square, named after the The New York Times, is a large and lively neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan. The theaters of Broadway and the huge neon and television-style signs have made Times Square a memorable sight. Times Square is also more of an urban aspect of New York City rather then the Village. Walking Broadway is the newest attraction to hit the Times Square; it makes Broadway come alive for theatre fans and also the visitors. Broadway is also another major attraction in Times Square. Broadway is the oldest north-south main thoroughfare in the city and is home to many Broadway theaters, which house many commercial musicals. This part of the Broadway is also known as The Great White Way.

After you are through touring Times Square you can head on to Central Park for a relaxing time. Central Park is a large urban, public park, located around Times Square. Central Park arose because of a poet, William Cullen Bryant. He believed that the city was getting to big and needed a great public park. Therefore, in 1853 the New York City legislature designated a 700 acre area for the development of the park. As the constuction of Central Park came under way many statues and monuments were added. However at first scluptures and statues were not allowed because of the “clutter” they would create. Many of the first statues were authors and poets. The better-known sculptors were also represented in Central Park, including Augustus Saint-Gaudens and John Quincy Adams Ward. Another well known statue is, a large memorial to Duke Ellington created by sculptor Robert Graham which was dedicated to him in 1997. The oldest sculpture in the Park is the "Cleopatra's Needle," which is actually an Egyptian obelisk of Tutmose III which is also much older than Cleopatra. It was donated to New York by the Khedive of Egypt.

Besides the history of Central Park, there is also the exciting aspect of it. In this 843 acre park, there also lies a beautiful zoo. You would never believe that a zoo and an 843 acre park would lie in The Concrete Jungle. Yet, it does, and it isnt some little zoo either, it is home to many rare and endangered species. The Central Park Zoo has only been around since 1988, however, its full history stetches back to the last century. This zoo is also very well known as the cities landmark which launched the modern trend of urban zoos. The zoo stretches from a steamy rain forest to an icy tundra. Consisting of an Anartic penguin habitat. It leads visitors through tropic, temperate, and even polar regions in order to meet these fascinating creatures. The zoo carries a variety of animals, extending from the tiny leafcutter ants to the gigantic polar bears.

There was also another portion that was added to the Central Park Zoo. This portion was The Tisch Children’s Zoo, which was added in 1997. This children’s zoo lets children and animal lovers to meet these extraordinary creatures and get up close. There are also year- round education classes and innovative public programs such as the zoo’s “wildlife theater”. These classes and programs encourage visitors of all ages to learn and understand more about the world around us. The classes also encourage all ages to become involved in the environment’s protection. Also through the American Zoo and Aquarium Association’s Species Survival Program, the zoo is involved in helping endangered species.

As you can see, New York City has something for everyone, for example, it has Broadway for the people who enjoy to see the plays and musicals, Times Square for people who like to go shopping and Central Park for those who are animal lovers and are aroused by nature. The city even has something for people who enjoy learning about the history around us, The Museum of Natural History. This museum has a staff of about one thousand and two hundred people and it also sponsors over one hundred field expeditions each year. The Museum was founded in 1869. It first resided in the Arsenal building of Central Park. In 1874, however, ground was broken for the construction of its present building, which now, occupies most of Manhattan Square. The Museum is very famous for its habitat groups of African, Asian and North American mammals, for the full-size model of a Blue Whale suspended in air in the hall of oceans, for the 62-foot Haida carved and painted war canoe from the Pacific Northwest, and for the "Star of India", the largest blue sapphire in the world. As you can see the Museum of Natural History contains very impressive findings. Another impressive exhibit is the anthropological collections. These collections feature Halls of Asian People and of Pacific People, of Man in Africa, Native American collections, and collections from Mexico and Central America.

The Hayden Planetarium, connected to the museum, is now a part of the Rose Center for Earth and Space, it is housed in a glass cube which contains the spherical Space Theater, designed by James Stewart Polshek. This Center was opened on February 19, 2000. The Museum also offers membership categories, with prices ranging from fiftey five dollars for individuals, to seven hundred fifty dollars for sponsors. The mueseum also includes a museum shop, library collection, anthroplogy division, and even invertebrate zoology. The Museum of Natural History has many interesting exhibits and many days can be spent and you still would not learn everything there is to learn in this museum.

The next museum is for the art lovers, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Met, is one of the world's largest and most important art museums, it is located on the eastern edge of Central Park in Manhattan. The MET’s gigantic collection ranges from treasures of Classical Antiquity such as, its Greek galleries and Cypriot galleries, to nearly all the European masters. This museum does not only treasure European art, it also has an extensive collection of American Art. The MET also possesses many holdings in Egyptian art such as, the Temple of Dendur. African, Asian, Oceanic, Middle Eastern, Byzantine and Islamic art are also present in the MET. The museum also contains fine interiors, designed by a very famous American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.

This Museum does not only contain art pieces, it also contains a unique Department of Arms and Armor. It displays an exquisite collection from around the world, primarily from Europe, some from Japan, some from America and the Middle East. The newest addition to the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a piece of art, Duccio's Madonna and Child, costing the museum more than 45 million dollars. The painting is only 8 x 11 inches however it was the most expensive piece of art the MET has ever bought. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is widely considered to be the best art museum in the world. So if someone is in the city, they should be sure to visit there.

Another interesting museum that lies in New York City is Madam Tassaud’s Wax Museum. A wax museum or waxworks consists of a collection of wax figures representing famous people from history and modern times and they are exhibited in life-like poses. The making of a wax figurine also takes a lot of time. For example, the hair of a wax figurine is put it one strand at a time. Imagine how long it must take to weave a whole head of hair! Wax museums often have a special section called the chamber of horrors in which the more excruciating and disturbing exhibits are displayed. The most famous name associated with these wax museums is Madame Tussaud's. In 1835 Madame Tussaud established her first permanent exhibition in London's Baker Street. There is also a large Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum in Dam Square, Amsterdam and at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. The best thing about the wax museum is that the wax figures are so life like that it scares you and you could also pose with the figures; therefore, you can tell all your friends that you met a famous celebrity when you really did not.

New York City does not only feature history and museums, it also has some great sports teams, such as the New York Yankees, the New York Mets, and the New York Knicks. The best part about these teams is that you can watch all three of them in New York City. The Knicks, plays in Madison Square Garden, the Yankees, play in the Bronx, and theMets, play in the Shea Stadium. The Yankees are also considered to be the best franchise in the world. The Yankees have also been around for more then a hundred years. They have won a very impressive 26 World Series games. The Yankees were known as the Baltimore Orioles from 1901 to 1902. New York Highlanders, 1903-1910. "Yankees" and "Highlanders" used interchangeably over the next couple of years. Finally after all that come the Yankees, the Bronx Bombers.

In the American History, it is written how the Americans fought bravely for the their independence. The Statue of Liberty stands for that and you can only find it in New York City. The Statue of Liberty, in full “Liberty Enlightening the World”, is a statue, given to the U.S. by France in the late 19th century. The statue is located at the mouth of the Hudson River in New York Harbor as a welcome to all returning Americans, visitors, and immigrants. The sculptor of this momentous peice was Frederic Auguste Bartholdi; Gustave Eiffel. (Eiffel Tower) The statue is made out of copper and is often called the goddess of Liberty. It was a present from France, as a centennial gift to the U.S. and also as a sign of friendship between the two nations. The pedestal was constructed by the United States. It is also said that The Statue of Liberty is often used as a symbol that personifies the entire nation of the United States, kind of like Uncle Sam.

It was also agreed upon between the French and the Americans that the American people would build the pedestal where the statue would stand, and the French people were responsible for the Statue and its assembly in the United States. However, because of the lack of funds in both France and America; they had to raise money and therefore the project took longer then it was estimated. In France, public fees, various forms of entertainment, and a lottery were some of the methods used to raise the 2,250,000 francs. The United States raised funds by hosting theatrical events, art exhibitions, auctions and prizes. These events assisted in providing the reamaining needed funds. The Statue of Liberty as you can see was not a over night project it took many months and years however, when ever you go to New York City and lay your eyes upon the goddess of Liberty, you will see that it was all worth it.

New York City is so big that it can also hold another country, Little Italy. Little Italy is a neighborhood in lower Manhattan. It was also once known for its large population of Italian immigrants. As Italian-Americans left Manhattan for other boroughs and the suburbs in the middle of the Twentieth Century, the neighborhood known as Little Italy gradually shrank. As little Italy shrank Chinatown became larger. Chinatown is another little “Country” which resides in New York City. Chinatown is an area containing a large population of Chinese people within a city that is not predominantly Chinese. The best part about having little countries in the City is that you can visit two places in one. Another great part is that all the different types of foods you can try and see. You can also buy things that you couldn’t normally buy.

Besides all the sight seeing and tourist attractions, the best part of this city is that a tourist or anyone can get around with out a car! In fact, a person traveling with a car would be at a disadvantage. Going around the city by the use of mass transportation is way more practicle then going around in a car. For example, when you travel by private transpotation, you have to pay for gasoline, wait in traffic (which ruins your gas mileage), and also look for parking which can always be painful. When you travel by mass transportation you could save money because you do not have to buy gas, you could save time, because you do not have to search for parking or wait in taffic and last but not least you can save wear and tear on your car. Therefore, as you can see, the sensiblity, in traveling by mass transportation which almost all of New York travels by.

New York City is one of the most exciting places in the world. Full of entertainment and culture, there is never a lack of things to do. Whether it is a musical, a museum or a walk in the park, there is constantly an endless stream of places to go. Traveling by public transportation allows one to do everything they want to do and go everywhere they want to go without the hassle and aggravation. With rising gas prices and the lack of parking, one wants to see the city and visit its spectacular sights without worrying about a car. New York City is one of the few places in the world where everything is at ones fingertips and where it is all so easily accessible!

Places to see in the Big Apple!

There is a reason why millions of tourists travel to New York City every year. In fact, there are many reasons. The Big Apple is considered by many as one of the best places to visit in the entire world. It is able to compete with all the other big namecities and come out on top or very close to it. It was even able to be in the top five for the choice of host city for the 2012 Summer Olympics. A reason why New York is so great is that it consists of so many diverse cultures and ways of life in sucha small area. It is always full of people, which gives you a feeling of excitement just being around them.

There seems to be an endless supply of interesting places and tourist attractions that exist in the city. An exciting and fun atmosphere is present throughout the entire day, so New York City is extremely well deserved for the nickname the city that never sleeps. There are just so many things to do and so many places to see, especially in a short amount of time during a vacation. The following tourist attractions are only a few of the many great places that the Big Apple has to offer.

Central Park is a wonderful place for relaxation and getting away from the big city for a little while. It is located in Manhattan from 59th to 110th Street and between Fifth and Eighth Ave. It is an 843 acre park that contains the Central Park Zoo, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, thousands of trees, many lakes, theaters, ice rinks, baseball fields, other sports facilities, and many more. In the previous year, artwork was put up in Central Park: the Gates. The 7,500 orange gates draped with orange fabric were displayed for 16 days and attracted even more tourists than before. More than 25 million people seem to agree that Central Park is a great place for entertainment, so they go there every year. You never know what kind of fun awaits you in this exciting park.

The Empire State Building is one of the most famous buildings in New York history. When it was built at 1,454 feet tall in a little over a year, it was called the 8th world wonder. It is located south of Midtown far away from skyscrapers. If you go to this attraction, you will have a magnificent 360 degree view of your surroundings. The Observatory is located on the 86th floor, where people can get a breathtaking view of Manhattan. Since 1931, 110 million visitors have gone to the Observatory and around 3.5 million people go there annually. The Empire State Building offers many other things, too. There are two restaurants, a sushi bar, three coffee shops, a post office, a Hallmark card shop, and two banks. It offers the New York Skyride, which is both a simulated helicopter ride and a virtual-reality movie theater. Many concerts are scheduled at the Empire State Building throughout the year, and it also has art exhibits that include items of King Kong.

The Statue of Liberty, officially called Liberty Enlightening the World, has been a national symbol of freedom and liberty for millions of Americans. When immigrants arrived in New York a long time ago, the enormous statue was the first image that they would see in this country. It was designed by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi and was given to the United States by the French government. It was a gift for Americas 100th birthday, and it was to commemorate the alliance between the two countries during the American Revolution. There are 354 steps to the head of the Statue where you can get a captivating view of New York City. Tourists can do many other things on Liberty and Ellis Island besides going up to the Statue of Liberty. The pedestal has museums that include exhibits on immigration and information on how the statue was built. The National Park Service offers tours of their museums.

The Ellis Island Immigration Museum has 200,000square feet of exhibit space, and now has educational facilities, theaters, and an interactive learning center. There is also the American Immigrant Wall of Honor, where the names of immigrants were inscribed by their family members. A great thing about this trip is that you only have to pay for a ticket for the Circle Line Ferry, not including food and souvenirs.

Another great tourist attraction is the United Nations headquarters located in Midtown, on First Ave. between 42nd and 48th streets. It consists of the Secretariat building, the General Assembly building, the Conference building, and the Dag Hammarskjold Library. The Secretariat building is the largest of the four and is home to the United Nations Administration. The building is an international symbol for the United Nations. The General Assembly building is considered to be the most important of the complex. This is where meetings take place with representatives from all the member countries, and it can seat 1,800 people. The Conference building behind the Secretariat and General Assembly building consists of the Security Council and the Economic and Social Council.

In front of the headquarters, there is a long row of flags from each of the 191 member nations. It starts with Afghanistan on 48th St. and ends with Zimbabwe on 42nd St. These countries are committed to the goals of international peace, security, cooperation, and respect for human rights. There are many reasons why you should go to the United Nations. Visitors can take tours of the four buildings to learn how the UN works while viewing special exhibitions and the gifts from member states. The tours can be heard in more than 20 different languages and has been completed by 37 million people. The United Nations has a Gift Center, Bookstore, and Post Office. The Gift Center contains many interesting items, like trinkets, flags, dolls, jewelry, ceramics, and other products that are all grouped by the countries they are from. The Bookstore sells dictionaries, travel guides, stationery, posters, and CDs. There is also a small park adjacent to the buildings that display artwork from different nations.

The American Museum of Natural History is located in Midtown, Manhattan. For 125 years, it has been one of the most renowned research institutions in all the world with its amazing collections and exhibitions. It has a very interesting architecture with many different styles, like medieval, modern, or somewhere in between. There is no fixed admission price, but it does have a suggested donation. This does not include the Sky Show, IMAX Theater, or any temporary exhibits. There are four floors of gallery space that spans several blocks. The museum has 42 exhibits and many temporary ones that cover topics from the beginning of time to the present and many types of sciences. It has millions of artifacts with extremely detailed information. It also features one of the largest displays of fossils in the world, like the Tyrannosaurus Rex.

The Rose Center for Earth and Space is a modern building with a clear glass cube and a planetarium theater. A spiral walkway winds through many stars, galaxies, and planets. The Rose Center also displays the history of the universe, an ecosystem in a glass ball, and other space displays. The American Museum of Natural History is an excellent place for children and adults to visit and to learn things from.

Times Square originally consisted of only the square facing the Times Tower. However, it is now known as the area between 40th and 53rd Street and 6th and 9thAvenue. It is now easily recognizable because of all its billboards, like the steaming Cup Noodles. Times Square is the center of the theater district and is surrounded by 45 Broadway theaters known for their extravagant musical productions. It contains numerous stores, like Macys, and is an ideal place for shopping. There are also 28 hotels in the vicinity, and 37 million visitors come here each year. Times Square consists of many stores and places of interest. One of the must-see places is Madame Tussauds Wax Museum on 42ndSt. There are many wax figures of both famous and infamous people in this museum. Also, on 42nd Street is a Disney store, the Lion King musical, Broadway City Arcade, Creamstone Creamery, and Toys R Us. Even walking through the streets is exciting. There are street performers and characters, like a giant Hershey bar or Spiderman, posing for pictures. Times Square is a perfect place for the entire family during a vacation.

New York City is even more exciting during the holiday season, like the lowering of the ball in Times Square on New Years Eve. There are also many traditions that take place every year. Macys always hosts a Thanksgiving Day Parade and a fireworks display during Independence Day. Rockefeller Center is between 48th and 51ststreets. It includes the Radio City Music Hall which has a capacity of 6,000 people. The area between the skating rink and 5th Avenue is the Channel Gardens, which is decorated with statues and flowers.
Rockefeller Center has 24 acres of underground shops, the RCA Corporation, the home of NBC, an outdoor café near the skating rink, and many more. At Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall, there are special events during Christmastime, like the annual lighting of the tree, skating in the lower plaza, and the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.

Chinatown is in Lower Manhattan and is always packed with many people, residents and tourists alike. It is the largest Chinatown in the United States and it is still growing rapidly. It has hundreds of restaurants, fruit and fish markets, stores for other types of food, and many souvenir shops. Chinatown also has the Museum of Chinese in the Americas, the Confucius Plaza, Buddhist temples, City Hall, Parks, the Civic Center, Courthouses, and a Municipal Building. A Chinatown tradition is an annual parade for Chinese New Year.
Little Italy is located right next to Chinatown. This is where you can get a dose ofItalian cuisine and culture since there are many restaurants and stores throughout Little Italy. This is where you can buy Italian cheeses, sausages, breads, pizza, cannoli, and other items. Every September, there is a San Gennaro Festival that attracts many tourists. The parade involves the carrying of the Statue of San Gennaro from Mulberry Street to Canal Street.

The Bronx Zoo has exhibits showing more than 4,000 animals. Its is open for around 7 hours a day and the price of admission is only six dollars for children and eight dollars for adults. It is managed by the New York Zoological Society and it supports much research while overseeing a Wildlife Survival Center. The Bronx Zoo includes the Himalayan Highlands Habitat, Asian Rain Forest, the World of Darkness (nocturnal animals), the World of Birds, the Rare Animal Range, a Childrens Zoo, and the Congo Gorilla Forest.

New York City also satisfies many tourists who are sports fans with all of their teams: Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Jets, Giants, etc. Yankee Stadium is located in the Bronx and has a capacity of 58,000 people. Other facilities include Shea Stadium in Flushing and Madison Square Garden which hosts many types of sporting events.

There are many cars in New York City and driving through the traffic is an extremely hard task to accomplish. It is even harder to find a parking space because of all the cars. The best way to visit these amazing places is to travel by bus. You are guaranteed to reach your destination without the stress a regular driver has to deal with. There will be no more worries about driving, finding a parking space, or even getting lost!

If you go by bus, you will not have to take the responsibilityof getting directions before you leave. The only thing you need to know is which bus to take. You would not have to worry about tolls or even the high cost of gas. The price has been getting higher and higher for a long time now. If you use the bus, all you need to pay is a few dollars for a round-trip ticket. Taking the bus will enable you to get the true New Yorker experience. This is the first choice for many tourists. If it is a sight seeing bus, then you can feel free to take pictures while enjoying the moment instead of worrying about driving. You get to have contact with many people while experiencing firsthand how busy a city can get.

In addition, sight seeing by bus will greatly help our environment. We now live in an age where there is a lot of pollution in the air, and using this type of public transportation will be a good thing to do. This will help prevent pollution which in turn would prevent the formation of harmful gases and acid rain. Doing something as simple as riding the bus instead of driving by yourself will greatly impact the world you live in. It is only fair that such a wonderful city is to be shared with everyone else. So, it is up to us to keep New York City a great tourist attraction for all those who havenot been here yet.

New York City has a lot of history and meaning behind all the tourist attractions. The places listed and described above represent only a small percentage of the total attractions that exist. Besides all the exciting places to visit, it has amazing food, wonderful people, and an electrifying atmosphere. New York City has everything you might possibly need: stores, restaurants, museums, sporting events, theaters, all kinds of activities, the different cultures, and many, many more.

New York City is an ideal place to bring an entire family to on a vacation. There is definitely something interesting and fun for everyone. Coming to New York City and visiting its tourist attractions will be one of the most memorable experiences you will ever have in your life. Once you get a feel of what the Big Apple is like, you will never want to leave!
