The Tombs (Washington DC)

When someone mentioned The Tombs, there were two responses that I felt. One, it didn’t sound like somewhere I would like to go. Two, I thought it was a restaurant by virtue of the fact that there was a restaurant (a rather popular one) back in the early 1800s. I was out-voted and finally, we decided to ask the Washington DC charter bus rental driver to bring us round to 36th Street Northwest where The Tombs was located.

For lack of a better word, I was ‘surprised’ to find that the atmosphere was not as tomb-ish as I had expected. I thought it would be something a little clammy or dark and it would awaken the claustrophobic side of me – but it was delightful instead. The design of The Tomb is decidedly classy and nautical. Loved the effort they made to decorate the walls with OARS! But it puzzled me, then, why did they have to turn people like me off with a name like The Tomb.

The best way to find your way there is to make use of a Washington DC charter bus rental package because it’s not an easy place to find. Granted, if you know where Georgetown University is, you’d have no problem because it’s sitting right outside of the campus entrance! With that said, you can imagine the kind of crowd there….yes, mostly college students out to goof off and have some fun.

They serve up a reasonably good meal but don’t go there expecting gourmet meals because they have simple stuff like soups, salads, desserts and burgers, at best - something to chew on while drinking. The price is reasonable. I chatted with the bar tender for a while and he said that on Sundays, they have a brunch menu after mass and it’s kind of a tradition that they hold true to their principle.

The most interesting thing about this place that made me fall in love with it is the decoration; I’ll be honest about that. When you’re out to have a relaxing evening with friends, the last thing you want is linoleum floor, waxed walls and stainless steel chairs to sit on. Here, you get wooden booths and earthy colors and tones. Very much American and down-to-earth, really. Sometimes, they have the guys singing acapella songs to entertain you while you drink….we didn’t get that when I was there.

Organize a Washington DC charter bus rental visit there if you’re out to have a relaxing evening out with friends. Avoid it if you’re looking for a romantic candlelit dinner or want to catch up with friends because you may need to scream your throat sore to have a good conversation.
