When you visit a place like Detroit, all you are thinking about is the shopping, the museums, the antique shops, the cafes and the drinking holes. You would hardly think about something like a park unless you have rented up a bus from a reputable Detroit charter bus rental company for a group trip with little kids in tow.
Well, here's somewhere you should head to whether you have kids with you or not...Belle Isle Park in Detroit! In its full nearly-a-thousand acre glory, you will find beach areas, nature center, tennis court, water slides for the kids, and a nice little (not so little, actually) bridge connecting you back to the city. At night or in the late afternoons, you could just sit there and gaze out into the downtown skyline....it's stunning.
Even if you are not a kid, you will want to know more about how this place came about. OK, that's the cue for some information and history.
Actually, the native Americans were the first to embrace this beautiful park because it is right smack in the middle of the Detroit River which provides for fascinatingly unforgettable scenery. Back in the 19th century, it was called the Wah-na-be-zee or Swan Island. I think Belle Isle Park sounds so much more swanky now. You won't stop taking pictures if you are shutter-happy tourist. Photographers often find themselves continuously drawn to the Belle Isle Park time and time again.
One of most popular attractions or buildings in Belle Isle is the casino (for very obvious reasons) and also the Horticulture Building. You know the feeling of taking the first step into a jungle, the aura of mystic and your senses swarmed by the luscious feeling that nature gives out? Yup, that's the feeling that you get when you are surrounded by (what must have been) thousands of flora and fauna. You've got to love the lily ponds – they're exquisite! Oh, and the casino? It was once one of the best casinos in the country, that was before Las Vegas came around.
So, what you can expect here in Belle Isle Park of Detroit Michigan is this – non-stop nature, memorials, fields, water falls, slides, lagoons, majestic buildings and wonderful memories.
