What was it like visiting Gibson House? It was like stepping off the rented charter bus into a whole new era!
It is not merely the house that gives off the feeling of being in
another place and time, the public garden leading to the house was also a
beauty unto itself. For those who are really stressed out, looking for a
place that is romantic and historical at the same time, this is the
place for you.
We weren't actually looking for a historical place but one of us was searching for a place to visit in the bus and chanced upon a link to their website. We were merely lounging around in the comfortable rented charter bus, listening to music and chit-chating while the bus driver tried to beat the impossible traffic gridlock. We were quite suddenly around Commonwealth Avenue area and....we decided to take a walk to Gibson House instead.
The garden reminded me of pictures I have seen of a real garden back in the 19th century. So mystical and magical! You don't have the crowd you have to contend with when you are downtown. There is no sound of blaring, angry cars honking each other. Oh, and the air – THAT must be what heaven smells like.
If you closed your eyes and let your imagination take over, you might actually hear horse hooves hitting the ground.
Gibson House must have undergone a fair bit of renovation and up-keep because it looked almost brand new. Everything in the house tells me that this house was once home to an upper-middle-class family. I couldn't help peeking curiously into the kitchen and butler's pantry. They were all very well-maintained.
It seems that, according to the guide, all the furniture that we saw on that day were the ones used by the Gibson family when they were still living here.
You know the curiosity you feel when you first visit your friend's home? How you wonder about their lifestyle and stealing a curious look into their medicine cabinet? Yeah, it was a little bit like that AND MORE!
So, would I recommend this place? Absolutely, without a smidgen of doubt.
