The Heidelberg Project (Detroit MI)

We saw the video of The Heidelberg Project before we read about it. The video link is here if you are interested.

The outdoor art exhibition is located at one of the most feared locations in Michigan. Rewind time by a decade or so, Heidelberg is considered dangerous. But we heard that things have changed now. It is now an urban residential area.

The people behind this project are Tyree Guyton and his grandfather whom everyone lovingly refers to Grandpa Sam. The artist uses thrash or things that the residents no longer needs to express himself and to create an art piece. As much an artistic expression as it is, it is also a political protest. AND a tourist attraction.

When we heard that the Heidelberg project was almost completely destroyed and taken apart twice before, we knew that if we wanted to see it with our very own eyes (as opposed admiring photos on the internet), we had to do it soon. The vibe there is incredible...like nothing else I have ever seen (for an art exhibition).

In the middle of a crumbling neighborhood where people were afraid to walk outside unaccompanied, rose this phenomenal attraction. It gives hope to the residents and provide them with a vision of the future that they are entitled to. Such strong sentiments went into each object and house. The art exhibition continues to woo foreign visitors and local holiday-goers alike and the message that I got from our charter bus visit to Heidelberg Project was – save dying neighborhoods.

Every art exhibit tells me that the main purpose of this project is to help communities through creative arts.

One of the visitors with us said that Kate Moss once used the Heidelberg Project as a backdrop of a magazine cover. My favorite part was the Cultural Village which serves not only to awe, it also educates and inspire. Every dollar made from the project goes back to the impoverished community. On August 26th, 2006, the Heidelberg Project celebrated its 20th birthday. Yes, it has been around for a long time.

To ensure the continued growth of the art community, they have a children's center too. It consists of a very comprehensive program which appends the lack of art education in the local schools.

Have you ever been there? If yes, please share your experience with us and our readers.
