The Boston Common has had many purposes over the years. It was used as a camp by the British before the Revolutionary War, and was where they left from for the Battle of Lexington and Concord. Up until 1830, it was used for cattle grazing. It was also used for public hangings up until 1817.
At The State House you can see where the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed in July 1776 to cheering crowds. King's Chapel and Burying Ground, this was Boston's only burying ground for over 30 years, many notable folks are interred here. See the first Public School and the Old Corner Bookstore where Ticknor and Fields Publishing House was located here from 1832 to 1865, it became known as the Old Corner Bookstore. During the 19th century, this building became the center of literary Boston when such noted authors as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Charles Dickens as well as Oliver Wendell Holmes would gather here and chat. Old South Meeting House where the Colonists met to plan the Boston Tea Party. Boston Massacre Site commemorates an event that laid the foundation for the American Revolution. Prior to beginning celebrating Independence Day in July 1783, Bostonians celebrated Massacre Day.
Faneuil Hall is another important stop along the Freedom Trail, it was the site of several speeches by Samuel Adams, James Otis and others that encouraged independence from England. Take in the Paul Revere House, we all know about his midnight ride, but now you can see how he lived.
Old North Church where the famous lanterns were hung that gave the line that every schoolchild for generations has memorized, "One if by land, and two if by sea." Speaking of sea, another great sight on your tour is The U.S.S. Constitution. Known as "Old Ironsides", the ship is a wooden-hulled, three-masted frigate of the United States Navy.
