Step out of ice, snow and the hustle-bustle of the holiday season and into the underwater world of marine animals. Enjoy a trip to the National Aquarium in Baltimore with family, friends or school kids.
Baltimore’s National Aquarium offers plenty of exciting exhibits to see.
This exhibit is teeming with sea life and simulated coral that looks like Indo-Pacific reefs. It takes thousands of years for coral to build up into a reef. So, the museum made molds of real coral skeletons when recreating the habitat that’s on display. You’ll see blacktop reef sharks and green sea turtles weighing up to 500 pounds. The honeycomb stingrays, clown triggerfish and zebra sharks are also unique looking creatures.
Shark Alley lives up to its name with various sizes and species of sharks, which are some of the ocean’s most fierce predators. The largemouth sawfish is a formidable looking shark with 23 large teeth protruding from its mouth, which makes up a quarter of the fish’s length. You’ll see nurse sharks resting on the bottom of the ocean, and sand tiger sharks, which are large and the most common poster image of sharks.
’Tis the Season to be Jelly
Jellyfish have an other-worldly appearance and movement with their translucent, pulsing bodies. There are many varieties. The exhibit has the Atlantic sea nettle, which generally appear with white, red or brown colorations when found in the Atlantic ocean. The Blue Blubber jellyfish spans colors from white to light blue to purple. Moon jellyfish look like a saucer-shaped bells and are translucent white.
