When and Where the Inauguration Takes Place

The swearing in of the new president and vice president occurs on January 20, 2017 on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. You can get inauguration tickets from your local senator or representative’s office. You should plan a head because there are only a limited number of tickets available.

The vice president is sworn in first and the president is sworn in exactly at noon.

Places to Watch the Inauguration and Other Traditional Proceedings

If you’re unable to get a ticket to the swearing-in-ceremony, you can still see the presidential procession and inaugural parade, which proceeds down Pennsylvania Avenue from the U.S. Capitol to the White House. Bleacher seats can be reserved but sidewalk views are free and on a first-come basis.

More people visit the National Mall than any other national park, and you can watch the inauguration there. The Lincoln Memorial, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made his “I Have a Dream” speech borders the mall. Huge video screens in the mall will be streaming the proceedings.

The Newseum also provides a panoramic view of the parade, which passes in front of it. At this point, tickets to the Newseum on Inauguration Day are already sold out, but general admission tickets are still available on days immediately before and after.
