The year 2017 marks the 117th year for the U.S. Open Championship, and top golfers arrive on June 12-18 to play the tournament for the first time ever in Wisconsin.
Since its inception in 1895, the U.S. Open has grown and evolved significantly and become one of the world’s most prestigious golf events. Golfers from across the globe vie for the championship title. More than 35,000 spectators are anticipated to attend each day of the open at Erin Hills.
The 2017 U.S. Open Winner’s Purse and Other Facts
The USGA increased the winner’s purse from $10 million to $12 million this year, which is the largest golf tournament payout, more than the Players and PGA purses, which are $10.5 million.
Professionals and amateurs with a certain handicap index, whether male or female, can enter to qualify for the U.S. Open. The final number of players is limited to 156 golfers.
A Snapshot of U.S. Open Golf Tournament History
The United States Golf Association (USGA) conducts the U.S. Open, and it is one of the four golf majors. The USCGA schedules this pre-eminent event in June every year.
Yet, over the decades, the championship format has changed. It began as a nine-hole tournament played at the Newport Golf and Country Club in Rhode Island. Ten professionals and one amateur golfer competed and the winner took home a prize of $150.
Ten years later in 1898, the tournament became a 72-hole event that contestants played over two days, and the number competing had increased to 49 golfers.
By 1926, the U.S. Open was a three-day event with 18 holes played on each of the first two days and 36 holes played on the last day.
The final format change occurred in 1965, making the tournament a four-day event with 18 holes played each day of the tournament. The numbers of golfers entering to try to qualify for the U.S. Open has burgeoned to more than 9,000. (reference: Golfweek)

About Erin Hills
The Erin Hills golf course design will offer U.S. Open contenders a decided challenge. Located in the Kettle Moraine of Wisconsin with its ridges of glacial till encircled by wetlands and a river, the landscape is quite varied. Course architects chose fescue for the fairways, which offers a firm surface while at the same time revealing the land’s contours.
In planning for the U.S. Open, architects combined traditional and modern elements along with carefully incorporating related support structures and logistics for spectators. The design is bound to make this U.S. open a memorable one.
You’ll find that Erin Hills lodge provides a rustic Irish Inn atmosphere with its antique furnishings and down comforters. On a cool evening, you can enjoy the Irish Pub & Terrace and sit by outdoor gas fire pits on a brick terrace that overlooks the first hole. The Clubhouse offers dining and also overlooks the golf course.
