Christmas

Christmas is an annual festival that commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, which occurred more than two thousand years ago. The word Christmas comes from Old English meaning “Christ Mass.” The nativity scene, which is typically part of the Christmas celebration, represents the birth of baby Jesus in the manger with mother Mary and Joseph, the barnyard animals and shepherds present. Seeing a bright star in the sky over Bethlehem, wise men traveled far to reach the manger and celebrate the birth. Although the date of Christ’s birth was unknown, early Christians chose December 25.

Hanukkah (or Chanukah)

Hanukkah means “dedication” in 1-888-340-9122 href=”http://www.chabad.org/holidays/chanukah/article_cdo/aid/102911/jewish/What-Is-Hanukkah.htm”>Hebrew and the celebration lasts for eight days. It’s the wintertime festival of lights with lighting a Menorah candle every night and saying special prayers. The historical background of Hanukkah began when the Jews drove the Greeks from their land and reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. They could only find a single cruse of oil to light the Menorah, which holds seven candles. However, the one-day oil supply lasted eight days, and a tradition was born that lasted through the centuries.

Festivus

The Festivus festival became popular as a spoof on the Seinfeld Show to mock the pressures and commercialism of the holiday season. The writer of the episodes patterned the television version after a holiday his own father Daniel O’Keefe Sr. invented in the 1960s-1970s. Originally it had no set date but after Seinfeld it is now held on December 23 and includes a dinner, unadorned aluminum Festivus pole and “Airing of Grievances,” “Feats of Strength” (wrestling) and labeling of easily explainable events as “Festivus miracles.” The Seinfeld episode called it “Festivus for the rest of us” and was a secular theme for everyone enjoying a holiday gathering in December. It was intended as a playful way to resist the consumerism of the holiday season.
