Visit Sebastian’s Unique Treasure Museums, Restaurants, Parks and Adventure Parks

Sebastian was originally a fishing village in the 1870s and it was a relatively unknown place until a massive hurricane struck a fleet of Spanish ships loaded with treasure off Treasure Coast. The 1715 fleet was estimated to be carrying more than $500 million on board and it was lost together with the sunken ships. Over time, bits and pieces of the lost treasure emerged and was washed ashore in Sebastian and displayed in museums and cultural centers. When it was later discovered by David Peter Gibson and Thomas New, the neighborhood was simply known as New Haven. Later, it was renamed after Saint Sebastian as, simply, Sebastian.

The loss of the 1715 Spanish treasure ships forms a large part of the city’s culture, as well as fishing and water-related attractions. However, visitors to this wonderful Florida city can still find good indoor and art-related entertainment that ranges from AMC Indian River 24 to Riverside Theater. Or they can organize a charter bus trip to McLarty Museum and Mel Fisher’s Treasure Museum to find out more about the lost-and-found Spanish treasure. For adventure seekers, you can skydive with Skydive Sebastian, go kayaking with About Kayaks or try out flyboarding with Flyboard Sebastian.
