For thousands of years, before early European settlers found Dothan, the area was home to a large number of indigenous people, who had complex cultures and were hunters and gatherers in the area’s large forests. It was between 1763 and 1783 that European settlers found the Indian Spring, naming it Poplar Head. After the country’s Civil War, which affected the city’s early settlers, there was the Reconstruction Era which saw the introduction of the Pony Express route and the city began to grow as a larger community, attracting families and groups from other parts of Alabama. The railroads were saviors for local farmers because they found a way to harvest and sell the local produce and to transport them to other parts of the country which includes masts, lumber and other related products. The farmers who initially focused on planting cotton began to diversity after pests destroyed much of the crops and the farmers turned to growing peanuts and related products. In fact, to this very day, a quarter of the country’s peanuts are grown and locally produced in Dothan and during Fall, there is a two-week fun festival called the National Peanut Festival and it would be an amazing time to learn about the city’s rich agricultural heritage. The city continues to be known by its nickname - Peanut Capital of the World.  Dothan also serves as an important transportation and commercial hub for a large part of Southeast Alabama and South West Georgia. On top of relying on its agricultural industry, tourism is also important to the city as hundreds of thousands of people pass through Dothan when they are on their way to neighboring Florida beaches.

So, there are fun local festivals for people of all ages to enjoy in Dothan - there’s the Downtown Christmas Festival which is held on the first Saturday of December, Snow Zone with their cookie decoration and sledding contests, professional barbecue festivals like the Tri-State BBQ Festival and PorktoberQue, and not forgetting, the Toadlick Music Festival which is a three-day country and southern rock music festival that the locals and visitors enjoy very much. It is the only monument in the world, as far as they know back then, that was erected to honor an insect and a farming pest.
